HBO's Six Feet Under Ends In Emotional Drama

Douglas Maher-All Headline News-Staff Reporter

8-22-05 1:12 EST

Hollywood,California (AHN)-The series finale for the hit HBO series "Six Feet Under" airs Sunday night in an emotional climax that is destined to go down as a television classic.

With the Fisher family in turmoil after the passing of character "Nate" in the previous 2-episodes, the series' final episode left no stone unturned.

The episode showed the family going in seperate yet emotionally closer directions, giving viewers in the closing moments of the show a telescopic view into how each character lived their lives and wound up in death in a cinematic and sometimes humorous yet tearful view of how it all ended for the cast. The scenes were played out to the haunting music of Sia and her song "Breathe Me".

The funeral home remains intact as subtle messages of the importance of family and love are put on display to make the circle of life complete.

"Six Feet Under" wraps up after 5 successful seasons on HBO with numerous Emmy awards and nominations.

Nate was a bastard to the very end...man..what a bitter character he was...even in death he was cruel. At least they softened him up in the last 5 mins.

Whoa, you're missing the forest for the trees. All the ghosts on SFU are a reflection of the living person's inner thoughts. They are a device to show the audience a conflict going on inside each character without telling other characters.

Nate acted like a bastard to Brenda, because Brenda is deeply insecure and cynical. He's the little devil on her shoulder tempting her to despair over Willa.

Notice how he was so supportive of Claire? For her, he was the little angel.

I thought it was kinda funny how Anthony and Durell both "got a girl just like the girl that married dear old dad."

My tongue is pretty firmly in my cheek.

One of them was holding hands with an asian guy, and the other was married to a white or hispanic woman.

All I could think of was "just like Mom."

I did find it sharply poignant that Claire was obviously blind when she died.

Well here's another one to get you going.

I REALLY liked them making Ted the love of her life.

In my opinion, Laren Ambrose doens't do the most satisfying job of acting when she doesn't have actual lines to deliver. But she really pulled it out when Claire sees Ted at her mother's funeral. Everything the character needed to say was right there on her face.

I didn't say the characters had any "redeeming value."

In fact, they had none, almost routinely.

About that, I agree with you. I still liked the series. But not because I anticipated or found any "redeeming value" in any of the characters depicted.

I also don't care for Carnivale, nor Deadwood, which are both popular with many viewers, but at least with Six Feet Under, there wasn't all the mud.

Let's face it, there is not a lot of filmed content being created by a lot of hearty "pro GOP" types.

Generalizing, I realize (I DO know of many Republicans who work in media, to state that point here), but I'm just saying, I already edit my entertainment to such an extent that HBO and DVD purchases of select titles are my last efforts to enjoy filmed entertainment.

I don't care for the majority of HBO fare, I agree about that. Nor that on Showtime and Starz but I still subscribe -- it DOES affect me as a consumer, given that they're donors to the DNC -- sometimes I just enjoy watching films and until pro-GOPers overwhelm Hollywood and produce interesting material, what we now have is all there is.

I, along with a few other conservative authors and filmmakers I know, continue to try to promote conservative titles and projects, but it's counterproductive to live in a vacuum without knowledge of what else is being produced.

She's gay, from what a lot of liberal, and gay, bloggers write.

Yes, she's beautiful if you like that sorta thing. I think she did a great job with Six Feet Under and also Psycho Beach Blanket-Whatever, AND she's a talented singer.

But still gaaay. It was difficult for me to take her seriously in SFU, I have to tell you, although I agree she was interesting talent on the Series.

I liked Kathy Bates' work very much on SFU, along with the actors who enacted Nate and Brenda. It was only after the first season that I became interested in the series, however.

The writing is what hooked me, more than anything. I find the series very well written.

Yes, the Series WAS over the top about gays. But, the creator, producer, and probably a lot of the writers...is reason why. Alan Ball had an objective with Keith, one of the lead characters, to "overcome his self loathing" as "a gay man" and that was one of the ongoing objectives of the series, from what I've heard.

It did bother me as to personal ethics and values, and very much but the other character development was worth the viewing for me. The Nate/Brenda relationship with various related characters was exceptional, as was Brenda's family (brother, Billy, fabulously well done in all respects) and Brenda's nutty mother (also fabulously well done).

The Fisher Family were all pretty completely imbalanced as were most, if not all, their relationships. I found it very interesting to view the ongoing Ruth Fisher-George thing, with George being the focus as "incompetent" while he actually provided the most routine balance and sense to Ruth along the way, including the final Episode.

Another captivating aspect to my view was the Republican, lawyer guy in the Final Season that Claire became involved with...I think his similarity to Richard Nixon (facially, the actor resembles Nixon) was interesting, too. THAT character was done very, very well, quite sincerely...and provided the opportunity to accurately reveal Claire's political and emotional excess by comparison.

Well done character revelation there.

Lauren Ambrose is gay ? That would be a revelation as she's married to a man.

Totally awesome episode. Just finished watching it on HBO On Demand. I love how how they made the Republican lawyer into such a good, sweet guy.

I wish every show could do such a great job of a series finale.

I've never quite forgiven St. Elsewhere for their idiot ending.
