Jessica & Ashley Simpson Used to Wear Bikinis to Church (Laura Ingraham Flip Flop Culture Alert)
Monsters and Critics.com ^ | Aug. 17 2005

Sisters Jessica and Ashlee Simpson got into trouble when they were younger-- for wearing skimpy bikinis to church.

While other churchgoers were decked out in their Sunday best, the singing siblings--whose father Joe used to be pastor--showed up in swimsuits and tiny shorts.

Joe is quoted by MSNBC.com's The Scoop as saying, 'When we were in church my daughters wore bikins and short shorts.'

'People in the church got mad at me for it then, but we believe what is in the heart is more important than what is in the outside.'

I don't have a problem with skirts...
and there is a difference between nice summer sandals and shower shoes...I can't believe people wear shower shoes to church but maybe I'm old fashioned Southern Baptist :)

Have you ever read the minute directions God gave the children of Israel as to proper hygiene and dress before coming io worship...and this was in the middle of the desert! I think he expects respect and the best dress each of us can afford as part of our worship. If we were going to dinner with the President, we wouldn't wear T-shirts and shorts. The Almighty God is more important and deserves our best. You may be poor, but you can be clean and dress respectfully and no one should criticise that. But to be a careless slob tells God you didn't think much about coming to worship Him.

I certainly don't ever want to find myself in the position of judging who is sloppy, or who is poor, or who is acceptable....or if someone happened to run their pantyhose on the way to church, then had to make a decision whether or not to go home, or simply take them off...or wear them with a run.

I'm glad that God is my judge. ;-)

'People in the church got mad at me for it then, but we believe what is in the heart is more important than what is in the outside.'

Then why display practically every inch of what's on the outside?

If you knew that God in flesh was waiting on you at the front door...would you show up in flip flops or a bikini?

No, I'd wrap myself in a trash-bag with duct tape and throw mulch in my hair and crawl up the sidewalk. Wouldn't want Him to think I was pretentious in my Brooks Brother's suit.

Clean and tidy is very different than "dressing in our Sunday best".
My brother a lead elder who does most preaching, has worn Hawaiian shirts, sandals, and cargo shorts on Sunday mornings and he has worn suits, neither outfit has anything to do with what he is lead to preach. My son-in-law takes his shoes off when he preaches, even though he always wears dress slacks and dress shirts but wears short on the Sundays he leads the music team. The pastor of my daughters church has tattoos, earrings and usually very short hair, on occasion he wears a head scarf. These are all men of God and it is the power of God through them that people in the congregation know and see not what they are wearing.
We have profound differences about this subject it is clear, but I still stand by the fact that there are too many people who focus on the outside more than they do on the character of the heart.

How does a bikini and flip flops

compare to a Brooks Brother Suit?

I'm not getting your point...sorry

I think a bikini and flip flops at church is tasteless.

I also know that God is not impressed with my nice clothes either. I dress nice so as not to offend the masses. But I always keep in mind that our "righteousness is like filthy rags."

Somewhere in the world there is a church in a jungle where people show up barefoot and in not much clothing. In the end, it's all a cultural thing. God isn't the fashion police.

Thinking about what you are saying here .... I do not believe that God even sees my outside, He sees and knows my heart. It is my heart that needs to be ready to receive Him.

Its laziness PaulaB plain and simple.

Its a lot easier than having respect for where you are and Who you are worshiping.

I know that some people wear what they have to church but many just are lazy and don't really understand who they are gathering together to worship. I give the King of Kings and Lord of Lords my best but many do not.

I guess its just my personal conviction.

I have worn flip-flops to church. But we were poor at the time and it was either that or go barefoot.

Why on earth would you wear a bikini unless you just wanted to cause a stir?

me too

I feel like when I'm getting ready for church that
I should always look my best
its a respect thing for me....I think
people have lost sight of Gods holiness and treat it lightly

Of all of God's attributes His Holiness is the only one repeated over and over again by those that share His presence continually

I think too many times we lose sight of that.

Smart-ass anthem, 'Signs', 1971:

"And the sign said "Long-haired freaky people need not apply

So I tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why

He said "You look like a fine upstanding young man, I think you'll do"

So I took off my hat, I said "Imagine that. Huh! Me workin' for you!"

Whoa-oh-oh

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign

Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind

Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?

And the sign said anybody caught trespassin' would be shot on sight

So I jumped on the fence and-a yelled at the house, "Hey! What gives you the right?"

"To put up a fence to keep me out or to keep mother nature in"

"If God was here he'd tell you to your face, Man, you're some kinda sinner"

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign

Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind

Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?

Now, hey you, mister, can't you read?

You've got to have a shirt and tie to get a seat

You can't even watch, no you can't eat

You ain't supposed to be here

The sign said you got to have a membership card to get inside

Ugh!

------ lead guitar ------

And the sign said, "Everybody welcome. Come in, kneel down and pray"

But when they passed around the plate at the end of it all, I didn't have a penny to pay

So I got me a pen and a paper and I made up my own little sign

I said, "Thank you, Lord, for thinkin' 'bout me. I'm alive and doin' fine."

Wooo!

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign

Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind

Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?"
