Just to show Im not just about Linux ;) Personally I think OSX will take some of the wind out of this but I relly like the idea of a clean desktop built BSD build..

Actually, I'm kidding you are pretty balanced in reporting on Open Source as well as MS and Mac.
Thanks, as usual, for the ping.

I applaud open source.
However, until I can communicate effectively via fax, email, docs, and presentations with my customers who use MS-Word, MS-Excel, MS-PowerPoint, and MS Project.... how can I reasonably consider being anything other than a Microsoft Slut?

So what would be the advantage to me, if I had other Linux OS's, to switch to BSD? Is it easier to install? Come with more "bundled" software? Any idea how the "dependancy" problem is handled? How would you rate this as opposed to Red Hat or Suse or other Linux flavors?

What did you think of that patent thread I set to you? It was huge, I bookmarked it to check out during the day tomorrow.
You've been busy today with the postings, haven't you? =)

Well other than MS project you can communicate effectivly. Linux has faxing tools, email is email (and probablly better done with a non ms client), and in addition to open office and star office (which do dec/xls/ppt) there are other closed source office suites for Linux..
Another big gap (besides project) is visio no good readers for the vsd format..

I ran FreeBSD as a desktop around version 4.9, if memory serves.
Java was a pain to install, thanks to Sun. It would run VMWare 2.x under Linux combatability, but after VMWare went to 3.x, no more workee.
So I went back to Linux, mostly for Visio and MS Project since those required that I use VMWare.
My lab machines are all server types with cheap, bare-bones video cards but I'll likely build up a machine to try this out. I like what FreeBSD has done with USB, SMP and wireless, and the Microsoft driver wrapper is quite elegant.
I already run FreeBSD on my servers so nothing in this is going to be a big surprise.
My only real concern about it will be the smaller amount of software available on a BSD platform. I imagine most things I need that aren't available in a BSD port will install under Linux compatibility, but I know from experience that not everything will.
It will be interesting to see if I can build a desktop machine with DesktopBSD that will fill all of my needs.

hmmmm ... I dunno, I like getting the pings for individual subjects. That way I can stick around in the thread for a while and if some doesn't really interest me I can just pop in read it and go onto another thread. I think your pings are amongst the ones that I always go to first.
