A 13-year-old was in critical condition and her mother faced criminal charges Monday for failing to get medical help after the girl's attempt to pierce her own belly button caused a severe infection lasting weeks.
By the time Deborah Robinson's daughter was taken to the hospital last week, the former middle school track runner weighed about 75 pounds and was near death, authorities said.

LOL!
I hate shaving for the very same reasons (guess I just need to get more flexible or learn to like bein' a gorilla)
I'm 5'9" and weigh about 150, and can run track. One of the other articles referrs to her as a "tall girl." I've been this tall since middle school....it's possible!
I'm about ready to start wearing jeans only and become more gorilla like in that department.
However, this does not apply to the pits. Clean at all times. Then technically, I'll be a gorilla from legs down.
P.S. I've never complained about my hubbys hairy legs, maybe he'll reciprocate. :-)
I just can't imagine a 13 year old weighing 150 pounds and running track. When I was 13, I probably weighed about 100 pounds. 150 would have been fat. I guess if she's 5'10" or above she could carry it. I just can't imagine a 13 year old being that big.
Then you can be proud to be a man and not a menopausal woman, they have to do both. :-)
I knew a girl who had lots of piercings, all self-done. OTOH, she apparently knew how to do it, and had access to sterile surgical needles and other necessary supplies. People who try body piercings with regular sewing needles deserve what they get (negligent mother circumstance excepted).
Ahhhh, the good old days. ouch!
I thought I was the only one caught in that cycle! I hate shaving, but I hate three or four days growth of beard as well.
In college one of my idiot friends went to a guy to get a tattoo. The guy lived in a trailer and not even a nice trailer. It was in actuality an RV he had just parked there for a really long time. He didn't even have a real tattoo gun. It was made from a Bic pen.
One of the more unusual piercings that I have seen in our clinic was when a 15 year old boy was spotted by the school nurse to be walking as if something hurt. The night before, he had pierced his scrotum with a 2" curved upholstery needle. He kept it in, so that the hole wouldn't close, and was walking around school with the needle still in.
I have a sister who's been a nurse in the emergency room. When the idiot comes in with the infected tongue from the piercing, the doctors always give a lecture to the moron about never doing that again after yanking the object out.
Because I wash and shave?
Yuck! A disaster waiting to happen. Bic pen? So much for new needles for each customer.
I've been to several piercing and tattoo studios with friends, and if the place wasn't generally clean and the work area didn't smell like a hospital, we moved on.
Ever heard of a needle with the tip wrapped tightly with rounds and rounds of sewing thread, dipped in india ink?
EEEEK!
Oh my, oh my oh my oh my.
Yep. I know what you mean. Any place worth a darn should be spotless.
The mother is not facing criminal charges because the girl got her navel pierced. She's facing charges for failing to seek medical attention for the girl over a period of at least 2 weeks after the infection became severe and spread beyond the piercing area. Mom's paranoia about doctors apparently led her to try home treatment instead. Paramedics found the girl near death, but already wearing an oxygen mask which was apparently part of mom's home treatment program.
Yes! Believe it or not a kid in my GRADE school had a tattoo like that! His brother did it for him.
It's not at all clear that she's going to survive, so the issue of taking her away from her mother may be moot.
