In college one of my idiot friends went to a guy to get a tattoo. The guy lived in a trailer and not even a nice trailer. It was in actuality an RV he had just parked there for a really long time. He didn't even have a real tattoo gun. It was made from a Bic pen.

Yuck! A disaster waiting to happen. Bic pen? So much for new needles for each customer.

I've been to several piercing and tattoo studios with friends, and if the place wasn't generally clean and the work area didn't smell like a hospital, we moved on.
