Soccer: Why is it hated?

Posted on 08/08/2005 11:22:35 AM PDT by onja

mods-If this isn't in the right place please move or cut it.

Why do most Americans hate soccer? It's not just that they don't like it. They are actively against it.

Soccer takes more skill and endurance than the other sports. In middle and high school you take a beating.(Elbowed, tripped, kicked, tackled- All done fairly or behind the ref's back and without body armor) There are many tactics decided by the players(unlike football and baseball). It's a sport many different people can do. Not just people who are huge or work out daily at the gym. Fast people, skilled people, strong people(fullbacks), tall people(goaly), small people, smart people. Footballers don't need much skill. Mainly strength. baseball doesn't need too much skill. Mainly the basics(throwing and catching) and strength. And, seriously, why does everyone think soccer players are gay, weak, etc? They aren't. In middle school half the team played another school sport. All of the highschoolers could easily have played school football or basketball. Out of the hundreds of players I've played I've never seen one who was even acted at all gay.

"...curveball..."

I batted .414 my senior year in high school, with 16 home runs.

First year in college I was 10 for 38.

Second year I was watching games from the stands and working for my tuition.

Nuf said.

Baseball is just a modified version of Cricket. And "American" Football is just a modified version of Rugby.

And very good modifications

Rugby - nasty game played by big nasty guys, who for the most part play by the rules. Most ruggers know the game is too violent already so hooligan like behavior is unacceptable, thus raising the risk

Soccer- intense game which relies on finesse as opposed to brute power like rugby. Soccer rivalries are intense leading to brawls on the field and amongst the fans.Soccer players and fans participate in extracurricular violent behavior as opposed to rugby.

Hey, if you like it you like it. That's what this country is all about. Freedom of choice

I did however read a very funny description of soccer somewhere, maybe even on FR.

Soccer is for homosexuals who don't have the hand eye coordination to play badminton.

Just joking with you.

Best Regards

"Same could be said of Hockey"

Who says hockey is a sport? I consider is barely better, and I do mean barely, than professional wrestling with a puck.

Some of my HS friends were on the soccer team and not weak or anything.

And the soccer girls were smoking hot.

But, I just never got into it I guess.

I think the soccer haters don't understand the game. Maybe they can't see the strategy or get the rules.

Real sportsmen can appreciate different sports (tennis, golf, racing, track & field, football, baseball, basketball, soccer, etc.) and the various skills each require. Sportsmen love competition whether it's a soccer volley or a record breaking fish caught in a tournament.

I really don't understand all the animosity directed at one sport. It's uncharacteristic of conservatives and FR.

Soccer is not a sport; it's an Italian aerobic exercise.

I will watch basketball and hockey (town is big in basketball, so I picked it up that way), but I find football rather boring.

People get tackled and after many minutes, finally go far enough for a TD. Big whoop.

Listen, soccer is blank verse. No beginning, no middle, no end, no episodes, and usually practically no score. It's fluid, with no pauses for reflection.

American Football is disciplined rhyming stanzas: poetry. It has chapters, verses, structure, exciting episodes, a beginning, a middle with a rest in it, an end. Its four quarters are like the seasons, so the game is like the year in brief. It teaches teamwork, specialization, and combat skills.

And it is American.

Onja, the soccer players here were the same..smart, athletic, and Christian.

The HS soccer team was mostly composed of extremely conservative Christians.

I still didn't watch very often though, but it was better than baseball.

Very good. George Will once noted that football is the distinctly American combination of "violence punctuated by committee meetings."

The bottom line is that soccer is a nice game to play, but to be a casual spectator is torture. I can watch a hockey game without caring who is playing. I don't think you can watch a soccer game if you aren't invested in the outcome. I think the nationalistic nature of the World Cup is also a huge part of its success.
