I just sat down to watch the Busch race from Indy.
Unfortunately, I tuned in too early - early enough to hear the "song stylist" butcher Our National Anthem.
I turned the race off, and will watch something - ANYTHING - else.
Additionally, I phoned the NASCAR corporate offices (1-386-253-0611) to voice my displeasure.
Our National Anthem is regularly mangled, distorted, and abused before most sporting events. It is NOT intended to be a lounge act.
I'm not putting up with it anymore. I will change the channel each and every time a "singer" sings this song as he or she "interprets" it.
Here here!
I hate when the sex kitten wannabes sing the National Anthem and butcher it!
We have called NASCAR many times. They actually seem to be trying to have it done right at the Cup races this year but the Busch people can't seem to find anything but sex kittens.
"Yes Meatloaf; he really did a job."
Wow, sorry I missed that one.
"Personally I feel the national anthem should be changed to America the Beautiful......."
Go visit Ft. McHenry and I think you may come away with the opposite opinion. The song has new meaning to me now. The presentation they give is very informative and moving. Afterwards, I was allowed to help raise the replica of the original Star Spangled Banner. The next day I saw it in the Smithsonian undergoing restoration. That was a great trip.
America the Beautiful, yes!! I love Ray Charles' version. Gives me goose bumps.
I don't know who wrote America the Beautiful or God Bless America, they are both very excellent songs, but the Star Spangled Banner was written by FS Key, an actual eyewitness to a horrendous attack upon an American military installation when the British tried to capture Baltimore. When you understand the historical significance of the song in greater detail, you can better appreciate why it was adopted as our national anthem and why it fits so perfectly today as we struggle to stop a new invasion by those who want to destroy us and take away our freedom.
It couldn't have been worse than Carl Lewis. I think Charlie Steiner is still laughing about that.
Since September 11th, the third verse of our National Anthem has brought tears to my eyes. "O thus be it ever when free men shall stand Between their loved homes and the war's desolation...Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just; And this be our motto:'In God is our trust!' And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave."
America the Beautiful is a pretty tune, but it doesn't hold a candle (or a rocket) to the Star Spangled Banner.
Yeah I hate those 'stylists' versions too..any song they sing
becomes more about them then about the music or the lyrics..
Rots of Ruck. You're going agaisnt a cultural trend that won't die easy.
Not evertbodt is as good a singer as you are. Get over it.
Yeah, sure, and right after we get over marching around with a star spangled banner we saved from the WTC on 8/11
With Ray Charles singing.
Good site. Thank you.
The best job of singing the Anthem at a NASCAR race was about 15 years ago by an Alabama State Trooper at 'Degga.
They should hire that guy to do them ALL!
