What about red eye gravy? My mother loves it on grits.
Instant grits are okay in a pinch.
I would never put sugar on grits, but brown sugar is good on Cream of Wheat.

4. Thou shalt only use Salt, Butter and Cheese as toppings for thy Grits. Piffle!
Crushed red pepper or hot sauce is also acceptable. So is red-eye gravy.

To paraphrase Dr Johnson,"Grits should be well cooked, and dressed with pepper and vinegar, and then thrown out, as good for nothing."

I like sawmill or red-eye gravy on mine.
I don't know about elsewhere, but in Birmingham some of the better restaurants are featuring gourmet dishes incorporating grits. I've tried some, and they're not bad, not bad, at all.

The best way to eat grits is to take grits, a couple of over easy eggs, a couple strips of bacon crumbled up, and mix it all together. Salt and pepper to taste, then spread the mixture on buttered toast. That's good eatin'!

I like salt, pepper, butter ANd sugar on grits, and sometimes even add milk. And I will eat instant grits.
Precious few restaurants know how to make good grits, so instant grits can actually be better than some restaurant grits.
Don't even get me started on how bad most oatmeal is. The key to good oatmeal is butter added while it is still cooking.

Actually, mafree, I love grits and will put just about anything on them as long as it's not sweet. And, of course, they gotta be about as dry as pop corn.

My Mother made the best grits ever. She made a big pot of grits and then take any leftovers and make fried grits the next day...
mmmmmm...mmmmm...gooooood....
I'm hungry fer some grits right now.
To: mafree
I used to make grits and top with a fried (over-easy) egg and some of the grease (butter or bacon grease).
Probably heresy, but I'm a Yankee, I'm allowed to do such things. At least in the privacy of my own home.
