A Peotone man, accused of tossing a cocker spaniel puppy into his yard for his dogs to maul, has been indicted on three felony charges.
Marc A. Czernik, 40, is accused of killing a 6-month-old cocker spaniel puppy named Lucky. The puppy belonged to another Peotone family.
A Will County grand jury handed up the indictment this week, adding a third charge of criminal damage to property to the initial charges of aggravated cruelty and attempted theft. All are felonies punishable by up to four years each in prison.
The puppy's owner, Mark Rogers, said his family was on vacation and Lucky was in the yard of a relative when he went missing July 3. An immediate neighborhood search and a $200 reward failed to turn up Lucky.
Demanded $10,000
The next day, police say Czernik left two angry voice-mail messages on Rogers' answering machine, possibly using the phone number from the puppy's tags. At first, the police say Czernik said the dog had made a mess of his house and he was demanding $10,000 to return the puppy. Then, the police say Czernik called back and told the owners to come quickly or he would toss the pup into his fenced-in backyard with two larger dogs -- a pit bull and a Chesapeake retriever -- and let them eat Lucky.
When Rogers' 22-year-old daughter retrieved the messages, she traced an address through caller ID, and went straight to Czernik's home, where she found Lucky mauled and wet with blood. The dog died shortly afterward at an emergency animal clinic in Frankfort.
Czernik was arrested July 17.
Attempts to reach him for comment were unsuccessful.
The cocker spaniel puppy had been Rogers' gift to his wife, Karen, to cheer her up after the death of her mother in January. She chose the name Lucky because the dog joined the family on St. Patrick's Day.
"He was really a fabulous pup," Mark Rogers said. "Lucky was the first dog that I have ever owned in my life."
"Lucky" wasn't lucky, was he.

Toss Czernik in a fenced in yard with about 3 big mean dogs and if he gets out he's free to go.
String 'em up.
Hopefully Czernik will now be thrown to the dogs (in prison).

And make sure he has no clothes on so that they can get to the good parts easily.
Oh I'm sure he'll be in a 'fenced in yard' :-)
And as to the '3 big mean dogs'.. I'm sure he'll meet more than his fair share :-)

Agreed.........that's what we need to start doing. Punish perpetrators with the same fate they cast on their victims. I hope this clod burns in hell!

Throw him in a cell with three of these savage Islamonazis like the kind we have at Gitmo, or the ones who attacked Louis Pepe. If he's the last survivor, he's free to go - but he pays for his own medical care for whatever injuries he sustains.
