Word For The Day, Monday, July 25, 2005 - assuage

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

assuage (uh-SWAYJ), verb
1. To make milder or less severe; to reduce the intensity of; to ease; to relieve.
2. To appease; to satisfy.
3. To soothe or calm; to pacify.

His generosity toward a group of young graffiti writers was, perhaps, one way to assuage his guilt.
--Phoebe Hoban, [1]Basquiat: A Quick Killing in Art

If only she would come outside
and let us meet her--face to face;
perhaps our words could turn
her anger's tide, perhaps
we could, if not erase,
at least assuage her rage.
--Euripides, Medea, edited by David R. Slavitt and Palmer Bovie

In one final attempt to assuage fears, the agency claims that these audits will comprise only "1.1 percent of the total audit-related contacts planned for the year."
--Daniel J. Pilla, "IRS prepares to intensify its kinder, gentler audits," [3]Insight on the News, April 29, 2002

Etymology: Assuage comes from Latin ad + suavis, "sweet".

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

Lunch. It is with great sadness the we announce the passing of Lunch. Lunch was an awesome goldfish, who rose from humble beginnings in a plastic bag at a school carnival ring toss to a five year career that spanned four ever-larger aquariums, including numerous castles and plastic plants.

Lunch was pre-deceased by his partner Wanda and is survived by his owner, Andrew. To assuage Andrew's grief, Lunch was laid to rest in the Mighty Saint Johns River.

Pall beareres included Andrew's Mom and Willie. Lunch will be missed, but he goes to his place in Paradise.

Dang, my musical accompaniament got rerouted. Let me just say that Gabriel Faure wrote the most beautiful music that ever accompanied fish.(in paridisum, which is lower in the Amazon screen on the tracks available for sampling.)

...but what I do know is that I'm still in pain.

I'm sorry to hear that.

Took a little spill at camp last Wednesday jumping over a stream (I knew I should have taken the bifocals off -- I misjudged the height of the rock on the far side); the knee is still tender, which surprises me. Fortunately neither glasses nor camera ($$$) got damaged; but this recovery seems awfully slow.

for laughing

That's just cold. (Andrew's big brother did the same thing...but he was properly solemn when Andrew's motherboard died yesterday.)

I'm home at last-

It didn't take the 'rats long at all
To bring out their old trick
Of demanding "full disclosure"
On W's supreme court pick

They have a snowball's chance in hell
Of suceeding with these dealings-
X42's not there any more
To assuage their precious feelings

So they can't have the court they want-
All communist and nanny state
If that is what they're hoping for
They may have a bit of a wait

Omigod, it's global warming! We're all doomed, doomed I tell you-it only got up to 86 and partly cloudy here today, and nothing above 90 predicted for the rest of the week. I took the opportunity to trim the yard when I got home, and I got all but the driveway to the boat barn done-as I was starting on that, the weedeater (an electric one) began smoking, making clanking noises. smelling like burning electrical parts and expired-I left it right in front of the garage doors for hubby to see when he drives in.

whyisa is prescient!!! she said this AM that xshub and xsboy were the ones most likely to see an alligator, on the golf course, and dang if they didn't! 3 little baby 'gators about a foot long each. they said they were SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cute and made cute little noises. xsboy was just a few feet away from one bc his ball had gone into the water (big surprise, every hole on this particular course has water on it) xshub is 50 ft away and sees xsboy standing there looking at his ball and xsboy said, hey.... look at this! i am so J, i would have liked to see the babies. What a cute little playmate for loosh if we took one home! ; )

RME, you go from worrywart to J over those gaters...........and Loosh would love it till one clamped on his nose. (I am so glad my bear moved on. And the silver lining? - parents have tight reins on their kids this summer......quietest summer in years.)

Notice the sign says do not "molest" the gators? sounds like a warning to all darwin award winners.......
