Word For The Day, Monday, July 25, 2005 - assuage

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

assuage (uh-SWAYJ), verb
1. To make milder or less severe; to reduce the intensity of; to ease; to relieve.
2. To appease; to satisfy.
3. To soothe or calm; to pacify.

His generosity toward a group of young graffiti writers was, perhaps, one way to assuage his guilt.
--Phoebe Hoban, [1]Basquiat: A Quick Killing in Art

If only she would come outside
and let us meet her--face to face;
perhaps our words could turn
her anger's tide, perhaps
we could, if not erase,
at least assuage her rage.
--Euripides, Medea, edited by David R. Slavitt and Palmer Bovie

In one final attempt to assuage fears, the agency claims that these audits will comprise only "1.1 percent of the total audit-related contacts planned for the year."
--Daniel J. Pilla, "IRS prepares to intensify its kinder, gentler audits," [3]Insight on the News, April 29, 2002

Etymology: Assuage comes from Latin ad + suavis, "sweet".

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I'm trying not to take too much of the pain meds....they mess up my sleeping and my appetite.

I really didn't do much this weekend.....in fact I never really left my chair at all yesterday.

It's only 96.6 here. Kicker is it's 77 percent humidity.

Yes, it's dry when it's over 115. Right now I hear the crickets outside. They must have hatched during the cool spell.

You just learn to drink lotsa water here (remember my first year? Scotch does not count as water).

I was online last night at my spot where I play BlackJack. You can talk to the three people playing with you. I had one person laughing when I told him/her I had to put ice cubes in my bathtub. The cold water comes out too hot for me to get in. I've got the bathtub full right now. Maybe, just maybe, it will cool down enough for me to hop in.

But why do the ponies take the five-minute swim? To cool off?

Not to cool off, but to get from Assateague Island, where they live, to Chincoteague Island where they are sold at auction on Thursday. The ones not sold on Thursday swim back over to Assateague on Friday.

They are sold off annually for 2 reasons - to fund the volunteer Fire Company, and keep the herd under 150.

Weather channel says we're 96 and 36 humidity. So you're worse off than I am. So sorry. And you're in a cast!!!

Did you get your Disability Placard yet?

I can't take showers. Gives me the heebie jeebies. I'd rather pour a hose over my head or dive in a pool.

I was burned badly as a two-year-old. Nerve endings in my back are really close to the surface because of that. It's normal. No scars, except for a small one on my shoulder. But I was burned on about 50 percent of my body, and luckily not on my face. I guess the sun in California burned off the scar tissue. Burn, peel, burn, peel, et cetera.

I'm hoping to get the paper work from the doc tomorrow - if he OKs me to be able to drive.

I'm a wreck about this doc visit.....supposedly I'm going to get the stitches taken out and a smaller cast, but like XS I only envision worst case scenarios.

I'm watching my daughter and her friend playing in the pool and on the slip 'n slide and I'm dying.

I'm so sick and tired of sponge/washcloth baths I could scream.

Hey Gabz, maybe you can get one of these cool gel types. The only problem is they are hard for us to sign.

There are signs saying Danger ALLIGATORS all over the property, so xsbrownie and i live in fear of encountering one, while the rest of them taunt us with imaginary sightings.

Trade you an alligator for the cougar that for a short time took up residence under the next-door neighbor's deck. It's still around; people are being very careful about their pets & children...
