JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Going to the bathroom will never be the same for one local woman, not since she was bitten by a water moccasin who was apparently hiding in her toilet.
Alicia Bailey spent three days in the hospital. She's now at home but she's not resting comfortably. She remembers what happened the night she got up to go to the bathroom. "Walked in (to the bathroom) opened up the lid to the toilet and got bit by the water moccasin on the leg."
She was bitten once on the thigh, and given the size of the bite on her leg, many predict it was a very big snake. Alicia says, "His head was every bit of three fingers wide."
She was rushed to the hospital and given anti-venom, but no one knows what happened to the snake or how it got into the house in the first place.
There are woods behind the family's home off Beach Boulevard and with all the recent rain, the snake could have been looking for higher and dryer ground. The family now thinks he could have gotten into the home through the dog door, but there's still a fear, it hasn't left.
Alicia's husband, Richard is searching the home trying to find the snake. He says, "What we're leery about is closets and drawers." He carries a big stick around the house as he looks for the snake and at times his shotgun. "We're not looking to take it alive. I just want it out of here."
Alicia just wants her life, and her house, back. "We're currently very uncomfortable in our home and toilet shy I would say, and real anxious for closure."
The Bailey's have an 11-year old son who is now staying with neighbors. They said, doctors told them, given the size of the snake, if it would have bitten him instead of Alicia, he probably would not have survived

At first glance, I thought this was pure www.snopes.com material. You know, alligators in the sewers of NYC and all. I was wrong.

Works for me. . .well, sorta works. . .

Of everything allegedly written by a professional writer, this has to be the worst-punctuated story I have ever read. Stop being a critic.

Moccasins are mean snakes and aggressive; bet it came up the sewer line as other posters have stated. There are cases where pythons have done so in apartment buildings. What has always concerned me is what happens if they chose to do so when one cannot see what is going on in the toilet bowl (if you catch my drift)?

Having lived in the South woods for almost two years, I have learned to always:
- Check the toilet before sitting down
- Pull the shower curtain all the way back before stepping into the shower
- Look in your shoes before putting them on
- Shake out gloves before putting them on
- Have a good pest control company that will spray at least quarterly :)

...but no one knows what happened to the snake or how it got into the house in the first place.Shoulda given that role to Johnny Fontaine.

Actually there are any number of ways for the snake to enter the house. Under the sink the opening around where the pipe are may not be sealed properly. In fact I've seen them where the opening weren't even capped. Same thing with venting hose for some dryer outlets ~ the hole is often larger than hose leaving an open area all around.
On two seperate occasions our son has a copperhead in his home ~ one they found in the master bathroom and one was in their kitchen. We helped them make a thorough search for places where they might be entering. I was actually kind of surprised to realize all the normally unnoticed and small openings where a snake could gain entry.

The most amazing thing to me is that a film crew actually filmed her toilet for the "Action News" or whatever!

Thanks for the information.
I guy I knew years ago was bitten by a rattler in NMexico. He ended up losing his arm despite the quick treatment. Also, I heard the boy scout camp I used twice in the Canal Zone (Camp Chagres) was closed because of Fer-De-Lance bites......unsure of that reasonable rumor though.
Vipers.....dangerous little critters

It's a nature thing.; Well it's a nature thing if you go off the front porch like I do.
Now they have come along with the Metrosexual thing, wanting men to sit when they go also. I found it really difficult to sit in the shower.

Reminds me of the good old days of lugging a lighter or matches to the outhouse, and listening for noises and peering into the dark for furtive movements.

The scorpions in Austin made me a believer of all those rules but, even then, you weren't guaranteed you wouldn't encounter one unexpectedly. I have a friend there who was stung while sleeping after a scorpion dropped from the light fixture over the bed ~ which they are know to do.

Snake In Toilet Bites Woman Could be worse.
To: kingattax
I just killed 2 of them on my lanai (back porch) on the same day. One was good sized (2.5 feet) and nasty (aggressive) as any snakes I have had to deal with over the years. If it was in the commode, then it probably came up through the drain line, and disappeared the same way (hence why they can't find it). Do they have a septic tank that may have been breached anywhere in the drain field? Could be the way it got in.
Whatever, the only good water moccassin is a dead one!
