Will Michelle Wie be the next Anna Kournikova?

Will Michelle Wie be the next Anna Kournikova?

My fellow bloggers Doug Carey and Jay Flemma have been talking a lot lately about Michelle Wie and her sponsor exemptions. Should she get them? Should she accept them? Is it nothing more than a publicity stunt? Yada yada yada.

Well maybe it is nothing more than a publicity stunt. But guys, don’t you get it? Women’s golf needs publicity. Really badly.

Annika’s up there breaking every record, winning 59 tournaments and no one’s batting an eyelash.

But put a 15 year old on the PGA tour and suddenly everyone sits up and takes notice.

So maybe Michelle does risk becoming the next Anna Kournikova—a media darling who's all sizzle and no steak. That’s apparently a risk she’s willing to take. If it doesn’t bother her, why let it bother you? For one thing, the book hasn’t been written on her yet. How did coach Pat Summitt turn the University of Tennessee's Lady Vols into the best women's college basketball team of all time? By having them practice against guys. Michelle isn't exactly wasting the best years of her life here, fellas.

As far as the argument goes that another, better female should get the bid first? Well, Michelle is still opening that door. One thing at a time.

Meanwhile, let the girl play. She’s darn fun to watch.

There is only ONE Anna.

Michelle's already got a trophy case! (youngest ever to win a USGA event)

Quite a grasp for the obvious

hehehe

You said "grasp for the obvious" while I was looking at a picture of Anna.

> If she can play with the big boys, I'll be happy to see her out there on the PGA

Well, not to get all
serious and dark and stuff,
but when the world saw

Jonbenet Ramsey
and how her parents made her
dress as an adult

and participate
in those weird beauty pagents,
the world was enraged.

Michelle Wie's parents
have her playing "adult" games
and it seems to me

she's being robbed of
her childhood in the same way
as Jonbenet was.

(I mean that, of course,
about Jonbenet before
the poor kid was killed.)

Put me in the category of wanting to see her succeed. As has already be pointed out, this will give the LPGA a much needed boost.

There will be no female invasion of the PGA even if she should qualify for a PGA event, or 2. She's 6'2" for one. How many women can make that claim AND have played golf at a high-level since they were a child? She's in that tiny intersection of genetics, family-means and will-to-win. There will never be very many like her.

I HOpe not. Anna K is a hussy. Michelle Wie has big talent and is also pretty, which is a must for a woman to make it in sports lest she be consigned to a life being called 'lesbian, looks like a man, etc.'

It's just you. Hootie confirmed her invite to the Masters if she had won the public links.

Hootie and I knew she wasn't going to make it. You didn't? Just remember 1 thing, the public links is only an avenue to the Masters for Michelle for as long as she remains an amateur which I suspect will not be for to much longer. Get over it.

Hey, I put the smiley at the end, I am not ripping your head off. I am not the one who caused the picture problems. Sorry if you took it the wrong way, bad things have me a little short with people these days.

On the subject of golf, I now know how these people hit the ball so darn far.

I just bought my first new driver in about 6 or 7 years. I picked up at least 30 yds on my best drives and the mediocre ones go as far as my good ones used to.

If an old fat man with a 13 handicap can hit it 275 with no help from the ground or wind, these people with excellent swings can hit it out of the county.

Hootie and I knew she wasn't going to make it. You didn't?

Yeah sure, omniscient one, you KNEW she was going to make it to the quarterfinals but no further.

You have a command of the obvious...after the fact.

Get over yourself.

Virtually every star athlete starts young. Tiger Woods was a child prodigy, too. Remember that 3 of his 8 USGA titles are for Junior Amateur (3 of the the other 5 are Amateur). It's not a bad thing that she's developed into a competitive player at such an early age -- she's still kept her amateur status, she only plays selected events, and from articles I've read, she acts quite a bit like a normal (well, maybe somewhat more mature than normal) teenager.

Anna is much more attractive than Sharapova.

Sharapova is a more talented tennis player.

Look out Annika, Here comes Michelle and she will dominate you! Michelle will impact the LPGA like Tiger has on the PGA.

Wow, way to go out on a limb there genius. Did you pick her to go to the quarterfinals? What's your point?

Michelle Wie would kick your ass at Augusta...and Hootie would have your ass kicked off the course.

As your so fond of saying for some reason...get over it.
