Smoking among our soldiers
Juky 21, 2005 | self / vanity

I have been concerned that so many of our soldiers seem to smoke. This includes the woman at the Abu Gaibe (sp?) imprisonment camp.

Don't you think that it would be better if this were restricted, at least to when they they are not on duty?

That way, it would be be safer, both for them and for those around them.

I think your vanity privileges need to be restricted.

I don't think you should be allowed to type without paragraph and line breaks. It's unhealthy.

Hey, I'm not on duty or at work. Are you allowed to smoke, eat continuously, drink alcohol, wear what ever you want, swear continuously or do any other bad habits or inappropriate things on your job or for that matter when you were on duty? Heavy smoking is a dirty, nasty, unhealthy habit and why should it be tolerated on a job or on duty? Since when should the army be anything goes or is it just smoking on duty that should have special clearance?

Bellflower;
I could come up with something snappy but words just fail me right now.

I remember C-Rations with the 4 pack of Luckys or Pall Malls. I thought it was stupid for the military to be forced to take them out way back then.

The US military is not a bunch of monks on a mission to convert the world to the good life. They are average Americans far from home who are kicking in doors, fighting and stuck in FOBs 24/7. This is not the same as having a 9-5 job in Germany where you go "Home" (Barracks) every night.

No civilian understands the 24/7 concept of the military. Yeah, you can talk about it and think about it but to understand you have to live it. If smoking gives a soldier a bit of pleasure in a nasty world then I say let them go for it.

The military has regulated sex and drinking. Let the soldiers keep one or two vices.

And yes, I am a non-smoker.

Rather a broad statement. Be specific please. Explain where you are coming from.

FWIW, as much as I dislike the idea of folks smoking, a war zone is not what I'd call a good place to deprive someone of their nictotine fix :)

If you took coffee away from our military personal, our military would shutdown. Cigarettes, surely you jest. It goes along with the coffee.
Think about this. I have yet to see at least any naval bases that didn't have either a McDonalds and or a Burger King on them. Hell, Gauntanamo has several of both. Health experts have deemed fast food unhealthy. Should we decide what are soldiers should eat too.

See a doctor.

While Dementia cannot be cured, 24 hour psychiatric supervision may deny you access to a keyboard.

Flame, flame away (my shield is up and my breastplate is on).

I hate to break it to you flower ... that's not a breastplate, it's either a bra or a manzier ... the kind worn by a nanny

When you get the thousand yard stare off the faces of our troops that is when YOU will have any say about whether or not a GI can light up a friggin cigarette.

Until then just be damn glad that they do still have both hands to light up a smoke with.

Why don't you just have this goddam thread removed before you piss off all the Vets on FR!

Damn, Harry, just yesterday I complimented on what I thought was your newfound sobriety & lucidity. Now you've gone & blown it.

You want to strip FREEDOMS from the very people who VOLUNTEER to do the dirty work of protecting our FREEDOMS? These people in our military have a very difficult & stressful job. They are often times thousands of miles away from home with very limited contact with the outside world.

It's often weeks after the fact that they know the results of the World Series. They see people who just that morning were their best friends being hauled off screaming, bloody and having lost 30% of their weight because their legs are in a separate bag if they are recoverable at all.

Do you really think it's fair of some high and mighty righteous jerk sitting behind a computer monitor in the safety & comfort of their living room to deny a simple pleasure of a cigarette to the poor kid in a trench or bonbed out candy store or overnighting in a mountain pass snow cave?

BTW, it's 114 degrees in Baghdad, right now.

Those who would deny cigs to our troops are mean. I can't beleive a conservative would propose such crap.

I'm torn here. On one hand, I'd like to see the uncensored version of your post. On the other hand, I wouldn't want you to be banned.

No one else shares my fondness for Schnappi. ;-)
