The open-source Firefox browser and Thunderbird e-mail client will be updated for the second time in a week because of code changes that have unintentionally stopped some third-party extensions from functioning correctly.
The updates will take Firefox and Thunderbird to version 1.0.6, while the Mozilla Suite will be updated to version 1.7.10, wrote representatives from the Mozilla Foundation on the group's developer news blog. Mozilla oversees the software's development.
It appears security fixes in last week's 1.0.5 update caused the problems.
"There is a very real chance that some of the general security improvements in last week's 1.0.5 update may impact a number of extensions that worked with 1.0.4 and earlier, and we want to identify and address as many of these as possible before we release 1.0.6," the representatives said.
Because of the impending update, the Mozilla Foundation has asked developers to temporarily halt work on localizing the software for non-English language markets, a move that has drawn criticism from some adherents.
"We are getting lots of e-mails from Firefox users in Poland asking us about why isn't Firefox 1.0.5 available in Polish," wrote one developer in the localization newsgroup.
"A few days more, and it's gonna be a big public relations disaster for Firefox outside the U.S.A.," the developer added.
Another developer attacked the foundation in its bug-reporting forum.
"Tens of millions of users are still using 1.0.4 while critical security bugs are already published after en-US (U.S. English) 1.0.5 release," the developer wrote.
Calling for the foundation to release its software in all supported languages simultaneously, the developer said that by delaying the foreign language versions, Mozilla was wasting the work done by developers promoting the foundation's brands in local markets.
Test versions of the updated software are available, and the foundation has asked third-party developers to make sure their extensions work. Fighting phishing on foreign shores The swapping plays on HP gears up for layoffs Amazon faces growing pains Online PIs draw privacy complaints Previous Next
"Extensions that interact with Web content and events may be the most susceptible to these changes," the foundation representatives wrote. "Mail-handling extensions such as (secure e-mail extension) Enigmail for Thunderbird and the Mozilla Suite should also be tested heavily."
A Mozilla Foundation representative was not immediately available to comment on the changes.

and I am sure there are MS nutcases too. I've not run into them, but that could be just blind luck.
I invite you to inspect the collected works of Bush2000 and GoldenEagle.
And then you will be enlightened, grasshopper.
I am a pretty heavy MS proponent but I...
Why?
Technical reasons aside (and there are plenty of them), why give Bill Gates more money to pay for forced abortions and sterilizations?
Why give Bill Gates more money to persue his anti-2nd Amendment donations?
People on this board have jumped on boycott bandwagons for far less. Apparently William H. Gates III and his merry men are somehow exempt.
George Soros isn't, but Billy Gates, whose company sold its source code (the same code that you and I aren't worthy to see) to Communist China, is A-OK with far too many Freepers.
Why?
This is a conservative site. Bill Gates is no conservative. Neither is Steve Ballmer. The Microsoft Corporation invests money in communist and leftist causes. Aren't we supposed to care about that?
I don't have to go search the web to find where people say it's perfect, because when I do, the people of your ilk will just say "Oh that doesn't count" or "That's some kid that doesn't know what he's saying".
You know the posts and general attitude exists. If you're not one of those that think OSS is clearly superior than MS and doesn't make any mistakes or has security holes then you should just ignore the post as it isn't really directed at you.
Not the posts I've read...it's about the mistakes.
Find one post where I said OSS was perfect in any aspect at all and Im gone for two weeks. Ill up it even more Ill put up my OSS ping list, find anything anyone on that list 'my ilk' have seriously said OSS is perfect and there are no bugs or security issues and Ill drop off for a week.
But of course you wont, you'll find a slew of people that say its better (and I am one of them) but nothing implying perfection of immunity from bugs.
If you're not one of those that think OSS is clearly superior than MS and doesn't make any mistakes or has security holes then you should just ignore the post as it isn't really directed at you.
What does better than MS have anything to do with not making mistakes and being bug Free? the Patriots are better than the Bills... there did I just bow down and say they are perfect and mistake free? The problem is some people are either so insecure or so wanting a fight they read into what we say..
Actually what you'll find is OSS guys jumping on the bash M$ bandwagon. Saying things such as "Get Linux", "I never had a virus on linux", or "Of course it's M$ what else would you expect.
So they are implying the opposite must be true. That Linux doesn't have bugs. Or that Linux is 100% secure. Otherwise, their just trolling for an argument for arguments sake.
Another classic is to say prove this...or prove that. And then frame it in such a way that it can't be proven. And then declare victory.
If I say use OSX or use Linux because Windows is full of bugs and security holes. What does that mean? To me it means OSX and Linux aren't buggy and don't have security holes. Now do you see where that perception comes from?
And now for you to say bye for 1 week :-)

Not only did you imply IE has a bug everyday, but you even changed the subject of the article--a major no-no on the freerepublic. Even the admin moderator had to correct you.
So now that you're gone for a week--I guess I won't be seeing a reply to this post for 1 week.
But I have a feeling you won't be a man of your words and live up to your agreement. But I guess you'll start debating what the meaning of the word "IS" is.
one correction... the moderator didn't correct you it was flagged to the moderator.
Which post? I also posted this article about firefox... I did not say when I posted this thread the IE was perfect because Firefox had flaws..
My clients all are using MS, therefore I develope applications in MS.
Have we heard anything about the political views of Linux and it's offshoots? I know about 30 people, people not here in FP but out in the working world, who are "Linux Nuts" and EVERY single one of them is a Bush-Bashing full bore left-wing liberal. I don't mean to imply that ALL of them are, but every one I know is.
Here is a list of other companies that donated to Democrats in the 2004 election:
Or will it just be Microsoft since it fits your agenda to ONLY single them out?
You're the guy that thinks he doesn't need to know what kind of hardware he's "progamming" on. The guy that doesn't understand what threads do and why they matter.
My bad, I've been trolled.
Frankly, I'm not aware of any of the owners of those companies having given money for forced sterilizations and abortions. Billy Gates did.
Most companies donate money to both parties. One can hardly start choosing which companies to boycott based on that.
However, I see no need to continue to fund Bill Gates' personal crusade for more abortions.
I also see no need to reward companies like Microsoft who routinely use extremely unethical business practices.
There are lots of companies out there that make plenty of money without being unethical.
Why people on FR feel the need to cheerlead for Microsoft is beyond me. When people like Judge Bork say that Microsoft needs to be punished for its evil deeds, you'd think that people that call themselves conservatives would at least listen.
Microsoft is in the same ethics league as Enron and Worldcom. I don't see anyone around FR cheerleading for them.
I know about 30 people, people not here in FP but out in the working world, who are "Linux Nuts" and EVERY single one of them is a Bush-Bashing full bore left-wing liberal.
For future reference, the plural of "anecdote" is not "facts."
You know a left-wing few nuts who use Linux. Fair enough. So do I. I also know a bunch of left-wing nuts that are unabashed Microsofties. And I know several serious conservatives that run Linux, BSD, Solaris and various other operating systems.
What OS a person chooses to use has nothing to do with their political views.
I know a few left-wing nuts who drive Dodge cars. Does that make Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth a left-wing organization?
OTOH, Bill Gates III is a baby-killin', gun-grabbin' socialist, just like his daddy. Now that's not a user of Microsoft software, that's the head guy himself.
See the difference?
{sigh}
Is this your answer every time someone disagrees with you or doesn't share your viewpoint? You've been saying that to me for several months, and obviously I'm not, so give it up already. It's getting really boring and doesn't exactly show your intelligence off to the level I am sure you are capable of.
You wrote a long, and probably very interesting response, but since you immediately started the name-calling, as usual, I see no reason to read the rest of it. If you show me no respect with your redundant "troll" thing, I see no reason to show you the courtesy of reading the rest of your post. Hope you didn't waste too much time writing it.
So they are implying the opposite must be true. That Linux doesn't have bugs. Or that Linux is 100% secure
Nope. What they are saying is that Microsoft has a long and distinguished history of treating security problems as PR problems instead of technical problems. That they still routinely threaten people that find bugs in their software, saying they'll sue if some guy announces that millions of users are at risk and should do something to protect themselves, rather than fix the problem.
They are saying that Microsoft has a long history of shipping software that looks good, but doesn't function well, simply because it's time to generate some more revenue.
If I say use OSX or use Linux because Windows is full of bugs and security holes. What does that mean? To me it means OSX and Linux aren't buggy and don't have security holes. Now do you see where that perception comes from?
Then your perceptor is broken. Most reasonable people would not assume that Linux or OSX have no bugs. They'd assume that Linux or OSX have fewer serious bugs. They'd assume that Microsoft cares more about their percieved security than reality. They'd assume that OSS in it's entirety and OSX to some extent allow end users to have some control over their software rather than be required to wait for Microsoft to fix what's broken. And they'd be correct in assuming those things.
What, to point out that when you puff yourself up as some kind of technical expert that you're just full of hot air? Yes.
You've been saying that to me for several months, and obviously I'm not, so give it up already.
No, obviously you are.
You wrote a long, and probably very interesting response, but since you immediately started the name-calling, as usual, I see no reason to read the rest of it.
That's probably best. It had big words in it.
Hope you didn't waste too much time writing it.
If I'd written it in hope that you'd get a clue then it would be a waste. Fortunatly, that's not the case.
I don't write to Microsoft shills. I write responses to their clueless drivel so that others don't see just their crap and assume that it's true.
I respond to you to warn others.
Fine. Then do yourself a favor and don't waste your time posting to me any more. We did this about 2 months ago didn't we? I told myself, at that time, never to respond to you again. Unfortunately, I forgot and answered one of our rants, my bad. That's a mistake I will try not to repeat.
As I said to Bush2000 a few days ago when he opened the same brand of whine...
If you don't like my responses, you are free to avoid the tech posts.
Or, you can moderate your viruently anti-Linux position, accept that Microsoft has performed blatently unethical acts and engage in rational, well-balanced and well-informed discussion.
Failing that, you can buy a hammer, find yourself a big pile of sand, drop your drawers and...
Well, we all know what comes next.
We did this about 2 months ago didn't we?
About that. It was when you displayed the depths of your talent by stating that, as a programmer, you didn't understand why threading matters. *snicker*
I told myself, at that time, never to respond to you again.
Talking to yourself is usually a sign that it's time to get help.
Unfortunately, I forgot and answered one of our rants, my bad.
Only one of many, I'm sure.
That's a mistake I will try not to repeat.
I can think of other mistakes of yours that probably should rate higher on your list. Like coming into technical discussions believing that a few Microsoft certifications will be enough for you to play with the big kids.
Your OSS pings are great and thanks for doing it! We may not always agree, but at least you have provided me with some great info and you obviously know your stuff! With your help I've been able to give Linux a fair shot, and although I find it lacking in some areas, I am slowly getting used to it. Now if only my clients would feel the same so I could do more developing in it.
One things for sure, if MS ever goes into the "leasing" of the OS, I will never upgrade again.
Then you should do a bit more research into Linux and security issues ;-). And then you may just come to the "dark side". So I take it you aren't honoring your comittment to leave for 1 week. Oh well, I knew it was too good to be true.
Big oops here...I thought you were NEBIE. I was kind of shocked to hear him say something as ridiculous as you just said.
As far as going away for 1 week that still applies to Newbie if he wants to honor his committments.
Apparently, there are a lot of others who have this same issue from the various boards I have been on trying to solve the problem.
