THIS THREAD IS INTENDED FOR READERS THAT HAVE COMPLETED THE BOOK! If you have not yet read the book, consider yourself warned: There will be spoilers on this thread.
For my fellow FReepers who have no intention of reading the book but would like to discuss the more controversial issues related to the work, I am asking you as politely as I can: DO NOT HIJACK THIS THREAD. We are all members of this forum and as such, it is not up to me to disallow anyone from participating in the discussion. That is why I am asking you--please do not hijack this thread. If you would like to discuss the more controversial aspects of the book, maybe you could start your own thread and ping us over there. If we are interested, we'll come.
How is everybody?
I'm doing great--I finally got books 1-4 back. My son just zipped through his second read of Sorcerer in two days. I've been reading through POA, but I think now that he's done with book 1 I can just start from the beginning. I might even take notes. I really am the Queen of Dorks, as my tag used to attest.
I don't think your theory is wrong. I definitely believe that VM's horcruxes were created after particularly meaningful murders--in fact, I think that Nagini became a horcrux after the murder of Bertha Jorkins, rather than the later, almost meaningless death of the old caretaker. I have the feeling the creation of each horcrux will be spelled out in the next book...at least, that's my hope, among other things!
Ya got it baaaaaaad! LOL!
Harry Potter Ping to myself-It took me so long to find this thread going through my pings, I forgot what I was looking for...oh, yeah Alan Rickman movie truly deeply madly or something like that..
FReeper retrokitten keeps a Harry Potter ping list. She'll be glad to add you to it if you're interested.
Don't know how I missed your thread. I searched for Harry Potter but only saw the Gitmo stuff, I guess I didn't look far enough back.
I'm dying because my OOTP is back in the states and I need to research the Regulus Black connection again. Now I have to wait for Xmas to.
From the key story comments posted here, I can't wait to reread OOTH and HBP. Thanks for the ping! Please get me on the list.
I'm intrigued by the whole Regulus/locket connection. I still believe that the locket mentioned so briefly in OOTP is the very same locket taken from the cave by RAB. I have been trying to put key events into some kind of chronological order, working on the premise that HP's sixth year at Hogwarts corresponds with the 2004/5 school year in the real world (just for convenience). I'll post it when I have it roughed out to see what everyone thinks.
Speaking of the Weasley's and the red hair, and connection to being an heir of Gryffindor.
I remember in one of the books that Harry sees a picture of a young Dumbledore (where he is looking at pictures of the Black family on the wall? I forget) and it describes Dumbledore as having red hair.
It would explain why Dumbldore's hair is described as "silvery". I've always known that red-haired people, when they turn grey, turn the most wonderful color of silver. I'm waiting for mine to go completely grey so I can stop coloring it, and then BOOM! I'll be a silver-haired fox.
Anyway, just thought I'd mention the part about when Dumbledore was younger, his hair was red.
The prophecy could apply to Harry or Neville. Voldemort "chose" Harry, the half-blood, ironically, but it is Neville who is a pure blood.
Plus there is the "Problem of the wands". Even though Voldemort has now taken some of Harry's blood, so that he, LV, has some of what Harry has in his blood that protects him (love, the love his Mother showed by dying for him, and that I also think is the reason Harry is "safe" for a year by staying for some period of time at the Dursley's because Aunt Petunia is connected to Harry by blood (or what we today would call "genes" or family ties), it is clear in "OOTP", Order of the Phoenix, that Harry's and LV' wands, having the same cores, do this gold-stream connection thing.
Big breath.
So, I don't think that Harry has enough hate to kill LV, and since there is this problem of the wands having the same core, and doing that latest curses regurgitation thingy, I think it's going to have to be Neville who kills LV.
Sorry I'm so late to the discussion. I read HBP the first weekend of it's release, and then started re-reading from #1. Just finished and am about to read HBP again. I just had too many questions after HBP and decided that I needed to read all of the books again.
TNT
I don't think Neville will kill Voldemort. He doesn't have the power. At most he might strike a blow that distracts or weakens Voldemort slightly, setting him up for the death strike.
I think that Harry will try to kill Voldemort and fail, possibly due to their wands having the same core, and that Voldemort will think he's won.
And just when all hope is lost, Professor Snape, the greatest of occulumens, will strike, killing Voldemort and avenging Lily's death.
Because Snape loved Lily, which is why telling Voldemort the prophecy that led the Dark Lord to kill James and Lily was the greatest regret of Snape's life.
Only love kills the demon.
Interesting thoughts on Snape, being the one who finally kills LV.
But I'd like to remind you that when Neville was in Dumbledore's Army, he was getting better and better. And he and Luna are in the Ministry with Harry when Harry thinks his Uncle Sirius has been captured by LV.
Remember, Neville was born in July, at the end of the month.
I'm not so sure that something isn't going to happen in book 7, where neville finds that Bellatrix tortured Neville's parents at specific direction of LV, or even that LV was involved, and he's going to find his backbone, and for the love of his parents, it's his wand that is doing to do in LV.
Isn't Neville's the "last wand" that Olivander sold?
There's more significance to Neville than we've been told about, I'm sure. He isn't the little wussy anymore.
Of course I can! schwing_wifey- you're added!
A couple of weekends ago I was knocked down with a sinus headache and caught Chamber of Secrets on ABC Family Channel. I got out my CoS book and re-read the part when Harry ends up in Nocturn Alley. I believe a locket is also mentioned there. Of course, I was all doped up on sinus medication so I could be completely wrong.
I'm waiting for mine to go completely grey so I can stop coloring it, and then BOOM! I'll be a silver-haired fox.
LOL!! Like Emmy Lou Harris.
Thanks a million for adding me to the ping list. This book makes me want to re-read the whole series over again. I do have the GOF unabridged on tape also so even when I can't see straight, I can listen to it.
I have all three DVDs so far but you know how books and movies go.. ;D
Its going to be interesting for Harry to find out that Snape is actually on the good side and was in love with his mother.
I've wondered often what Snape was all about and I think being in love with Lily is true.
If anything, either Snape or Neville (or both) will prove crucial in the final confrontation but I'll bet Harry takes LV out.
Also, I've read alot of comments here and I think Snape was angered that he had to play the role of the villian and finish off DD. But then again, DD was as good as dead anyway from the drink. Its going to be very interesting to see how Snapes name gets cleared because really only DD seemed to believe in him completely and then this happened. Since I know it was all planned, DD probably has a horcrux someplace with part of himself to assist in the final book. Don't you think?
If it's not too much of a hassle, could you please add me to your Potter ping list. Many thanks.
Of course!
You're added!
Sure was. I was disappointed there wasn't more Neville in this book. He is one of my favorite characters.
Absolutely not a horcrux (which would require Dumbledore to have killed someone) -- probably a memory to be used in the Penseive, however.
