For my fellow FReepers who have no intention of reading the book but would like to discuss the more controversial issues related to the work, I am asking you as politely as I can: DO NOT HIJACK THIS THREAD. We are all members of this forum and as such, it is not up to me to disallow anyone from participating in the discussion. That is why I am asking you--please do not hijack this thread. DD has always trusted Snape, and he knew that he would have to beg Snape to get him to kill him. I think DD trusted Snape so much that he would trust him to take his life. DD knew he had to die in order for Harry to finally take on Voldemort (sort of Obi Wan-insh). I think he also didn't want Draco to do it because he knew that if Draco killed him, there would be no way for Draco to ever come back and turn away from Voldemort.
I think you nailed it. I just can't believe that Dumbledore would plead for his own life. Your interpretation meshes much better with his character.
I began to suspect that Snape was the HBP early on, since he was so adept at potions. When Harry realized that his book was fifty years old, I was even more convinced of Snape, rather than put off. It was a second hand book. For some reason, that memory of Snape's from his childhood, when he was watching his parents argue, made me think that Snape had been brought up in poor, squalid conditions. A hand-me-down textbook fit him.

Now, IF Snape is still working for the OOTP, who is he reporting to with D dead (or everyone thinking he is)? Is McGonagall in on it? Is he going to report to anyone at all or is he a deep agent put in place to be ready at the final battle?

I think that Snape is working on his own now, independent of the other Order members. They all seemed genuinely shocked at Snape's actions. McGonagall is in the Order, but if Hogwarts openes in the next book, she'll be Headmistress. That will give Harry access to DD's portrait, even if he doesn't return to school. I'm interested in seeing what becomes of his education--I don't think he's through at Hogwarts. I can't see him leaving Ron and Hermione, and if the school reopens, they will definitely attend.
Just saw the thread, that is what I am thinking too. Dumbledore made Snape do it.
It was a "please kill me" sort of plea, I think. Snape, however, was also bound by the Unbreakable Vow, which pretty much required him to kill DD... An excellent plot twist.
Rowling really did a great job on this one, I think.... The only question is: does Harry go back to Hogwarts for Year 7, or is she going to compress several years into the next book?
But Mundungus Fletcher has been looting, too.... Harry could find it at a flea market, for all we know.
I don't know if i'm replying to the right people..but I sure hope that somehow Snape and Dumbledore had this planned and Snape really is still working for the good side..otherwise, I'll be really dissappointed in the books, which I've loved to this point..I couldn't believe the reason given for Dumbledore trusting Snape was that Snape said he was SORRY? Huh? Surely he's going on more than that..I like the idea that Dumbledore was planning his death much better..
I think Snape took the Unbreakable Vow with Narcissa because Dumbledore told him too. He would have to prove to the Death Eaters that he was their man, to win trust that will lead to the death of Voldemort. He will have to find Harry in the next book and convince him of this, I think.
By the way, does anyone think that Harry's parents may come back in the last book? I don't think they are dead because of him not being able to see Thestrals until watching Cedric die. Perhaps James and Snape will come together to help Harry kill the Dark Lord....who knows, maybe that is how Snape will win Harry's trust. I can't wait until the next book. Regulus Black. I knew I knew the initials from somewhere. I also thought that we were being set up for something being hidden in the Room of Requirement when she went into such detail about hiding the HBP's potions book.
Nah -- Fawkes the phoenix was mourning, so Dumbledore is really dead. Now -- seeing as phoenixes don't die, and that Harry is "Dumbledore's man, through and through," don't you think we've not seen the last of that particular bird? I suspect Harry will have a new pet before long.

Personally, I was pleased to see Remus Lupin apparently finding some measure of happiness with Tonks. I always felt rather sorry for his lonely situation.

I really think it was a "please kill me" sort of plea. Dumbledore was weak and caught, and they'd have taken him to Voldemort. Snape did his bidding -- whether out of self preservation, or some sort of loyalty. Probably some combination of the two.
Go back and read the Odyssey -- there's a pretty strong similarity in the circumstances.
