The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Great pictures Hair! Looks like you had a gorgeous day. Everybody had on long sleeves so I assume it was cool too, which must be nice. We rode from about 7:30 to 10:30 yesterday morning and almost died of heat stroke. Not really, but it sure seemed like it! ;o) Of course I forgot the camera again. I had it laying out with all my gear but got in such a hurry to leave so I wouldn't be late that I forgot it. You can go ahead and give me my beating now.

Cool picture of the elephant! I'll bet that was fun for both of you. I've always wanted to do that. Judging by the size of her ears, it looks like that was an African elephant which really suprizes me because they're supposedly more temperamental and not as easy to train as Asian elephants. I think African elephants are much prettier though. This one sure looks like she's well trained. The handler isn't even carrying an elephant stick, which kinda looks like a firelplace poker.

I somehow missed a page and missed your pictures until now. Looks like you had a good ride after the trailer loading problem. It's so weird how they'll just suddenly, with no apparent reason, decide that they're not gonna get in the trailer anymore. Sounds like you handled it well though. Hopefully it's an isolated incident.

The algae in the creek water sounds strange. I wonder if something upstream is causing it, like run off from a farm or something, but like you say, it might just be the heat. I wouldn't let them drink it either.

...You know how in mud clay where lots of horses have been through they'll all step in the same spot and it turns the trail into moguls? Some of the places were just awful with suck mud...

We have that kind of mud around here all over the place. Soemtimes, it'll suck the shoes right off their feet and if you're not careful, they can break a leg in them. We try to go around them where ever possible, but sometimes you just can't for all the downed timber. It's really scary sometimes.

Duchess, I loved your pictures too. I just can't get enough of your wide open spaces. It does look awful hot, but the humidity looks very low since the air is so clear. It's so humid around here that it looks foggy all they time. You might can see 5 miles on a good day before everything just fades out. It looks like you can see at least 20 from your place. Cool!

The trailer loading problem happened after we rode.

I didn't really handle it, I was just a sidelinehelper:) I've learned when it comes to other peoples horses and loading them in a trailer....you'd best just keep your advise to yourself)

Actually, she did alot of things I wouldn't have. She was giving him treats before he actually had done anything to deserve them.

She's had this horse 6wks. He was loading fine when she bought him. The lady she got him from had worked on it. She told me yesterday he is slowly getting more and more stubborn about getting in. Wouldn't you say, it's something she is doing wrong? He's figurering out he can get by with this stuff??? How often is she going to have a stall to back up too.

I've known this girl since she was 3, watched her grow up, watched her deal with horses. She's always been just a bit afraid to really be firm with one. Like getting in the creek yesterday. She should never have given up. She's going to have a real battle on her hands now, IMO.

She did try a butt rope with the loading, but since he had never had that done, it really freaked him out and he went to kicking. Right before she backed up to the stall she tried a lunge whip, she just tapped and he kicked at her. And in between she was giving him treats....He would walk up and stand quietly at the door of the trailer, if she started really putting pressure on him he'd fly backwards rearing up.

What would you do if you had a horse that loaded fine, and then just started balking about getting in one day?

We are more then likely going to Arrowhead Wed. to ride. It could be fun:)

Becky

I'd say that horse has got her number. He's not really comfortable with loading in the trailer and so far, who ever owned him has been able to make him get in. But now he's figured out that if he pitches a big enough fit, he don't have to. She's gonna need to work with him on it, and if she doesn't between now and your next trailride, I'd bet money that he ain't gonna get in. Balky trailer loading is one of the most aggravating things I can think of.

...she just tapped and he kicked at her....

Oh, and by the way, I'd've wore his @$$ out at this point. I don't believe in whipping one to get in the trailer, but kicking at ME is totally unacceptable. That trailer would've looked mighty good by the time I got through.

I had worked with Waylon a few weeks ago for the whole weekend and he was fine. ....walked right into the trailer to go home from the cabin. The next weekend he walked right into the trailer to go down to the cabin, On the return trip it took him about 10 minutes to get in. I guess he realizes he is going for a two hour ride and doesn't like that. I will work with him again this coming week, just going in and out ....any other suggestions?

Sounds like you are doing just great to me. That's what I do with Tennessee. I ask him to go in, he goes in, I shut the partition, I let him stand there a few minutes, then I ask him to back out, slowly. If he does, then we're done. That's his reward. If he doesn't, he has to do it again until he does. I don't do it every day anymore, but still several times a week. I want it to get so second nature that he doesn't even think about it anymore.

I think the biggest thing I did different this time is that when I asked him to go in, I let him go as far as he would without me putting any more pressure on him, then I'd let him stand there quietly a minute or so, then made him back out and start over. The next time he'd to just a little bit farther in. And I was always careful to end the session on a success. I'd read about this method for a long time, but I just couldn't seem to keep myself from pushing for just a little bit more, and it was a destructive thing to do. You know what they say about knowing when to stop digging when you get to the bottom. I finally decided that the way I was doing it wasn't working and that I'd back off and try something different and it worked. :o)

Good morning,

I love the pictures of the faire. I work with a girl who is part of a renassiance reenactment group and they have programs/affairs in the park nearby the office. I've never been to one though they sound fun.

We don't have Tuffy entered in any futuries- I haven't found any close by and we just don't have the time to travel any distance for one.

It might be what you said, that he's got her number, but it might also be her driving. If the horse gets knocked around in there by bad driving, they start not wanting to go in.

It's hot here too - we are setting records for number of days over 100. Hubby is going to check into getting misters for some of the paddocks and the rabbit cages - it helps drop the temperature in a defined area by several degrees.

I'm working really hard on it. A friend of mine is on the Board of Directors of the American Animal Cancer Society, at least the Ma chapter, and he gave me the name of the CEO who lives right down the street and supposedly boards dogs. I really don't want to lose him. Wish me luck! :-)
