The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

That's the part that'd make me crazy. If you evacuate early, you may move into the path of the storm, but if you wait until you know for sure where it's going, it may too late to get out. I think I remember somebody saying that late in an evacuation, high-profile vehicles like campers and horse trailers are not allowed on the road. So I guess you've just got to go with your gut and ask God to help you make the right choice.

It looks like it's just about cleared the Keys now. When's it supposed to make landfall again?

Very early Sat morning. Right now there is a high ridge on the east side that is stirring it west. Most models are predicting it will weaken though and allow a north curb. There are a few that think it will float right in to Brownsville though. I was looking at % and ours, galveston and CC are about the same right now, which I interpret as anybodies guess.

So if it looks like it's heading your way later in the week, how much lead time will you need to get to safety? I've never had to do that kinda thing before and have no idea how bad traffic might get.

I will depend on if it will be direct and the classification. We don't have a lot of ways out and traffic could get bad. My gut feeling is that if a 3 or less most will stay. We had a scare about 15 years ago and all the nursing homes (and we have a bunch of them) evacuated. It took about 3 days. Tomorrow, Thur at the latest people need to decide what to do.

EEE is terrible right now. I think that the saddest cases were the little girl, and a gradfather, (not related) who died. It's been confirmed in the town that I live in, but no one has come down with it, they've just found it in birds.

Mosquitoes are a real problem because of the humidity that we get during the summer, (Terrible humidity) and the swampy land that we have. Not florida swampy, but swampy enough. Don't forget that we also have a lot of cranberry bogs and such.

I asked her how much wind the barn could hold and she told me she didn't know if it could withstand any!
Oh hooray!

Check out these hotels that accept horses. You may have to stay with them though. I have a friend down the road who has horses. I can ask her if you want to take them there.

Boy, I'd hate to even think about evacuating a hospital or a nursing home. It was so pitiful about all those nursing home patients that got left to drown in NO. That'd be a nightmare. What kind of place do you work at? Are you a nurse?

Actually we had a huge drought over the summer, so the mosquitos were never really bad. There was no standing water for them to breed in.

Yeah, I'm a nurse. I used to work at a nursing home though. I now work at a brand new physical rehab hospital. (2 story ceilings with lots of windows and skylights;'( The nursing homes contracted buses and the really ill went by ambulances. It was very orderly. The staff went with them.

Look at that site I posted. There are a couple places within driving distance that are offering hurricane shelter.

I'm sure that is a standard response for liability issues.
If she said yes and something happened she would be liable.
