The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yo comprendo. Spanish is good though. You need at least the basics for health care in Texas.

If I could do it over I would have been a vet. I love "doctoring" the horses:')

Well abcess can be serious, but not as serious as founder I guess. I've nver heard of collapsed heels, what does that mean and what do you do for it? Well there be long term problems from it.

I forgot I took this picture Fri. till I went to load some today.

The guys brought me home a chore today. A parking lot they are going to paint tonight used 18 inch letters on their drive thru and Mack only has 12 inch ones. So they brought home a piece of plywood and I had to draw out "DRIVE THRU" in 18" stencil style letters on it.

Charlie is coming back before they leave tonight to cut it out with the jigsaw. Something different and interesting to fill a hot afternoon.

He really didn't seem too concerned. He drained the abscess, packed it up then bandaged the entire foot. He said if Tuffy isn't 80% back to normal by Wednesday then he wants to come back out.

The collapsed heels happen on account of the pads we constantly use on Tuffy to raise his hoof pastern axis. The shoer is in a very bad position, it's hard to correct Tuffy's problems without making him lame. I may call the vet back and see what he thinks about letting Tuffy go barefoot. He's extremely lame without his shoes but I'm wondering if he'll toughen up a little without them.

When he got finished with Tuffy, he did seem more comfortable. I just got home from picking the kids up at school and haven't been back out, yet. He should be feeling alot better, the vet also gave him some IV bute.

I've read some articles that said it takes a year for a horse that has been shod to toughen up going barefoot.

I would think just relieving the pressure would give him some kind of relief. Does he have an underlying foot problem though? Why the special shoes?

He has a broken back hoof pastern axis with the accompanying long toe/low heel, a very common conformation fault. We need to raise his heels to make his hoof pastern axis more normal or he could have other lameness problems later on.

Tuffy's foot looks like the first picture, but a little worse.
