This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Yeah - we decided to go!
It's going to be a pretty long ride.... the lady that invited us isn't sure but potentially 12 miles - she measures rides in hours not miles, kindof like you do, so we have to try to figure conversions in our heads. She said 3.5 hours.
I just hope Bay feels good today, I've done all I can to help prep him to feel good. He was in last night and I hope is rested. I think I'm gonna give him a dose of Bute just in case. I've got a very soft fuzzy cover to try on the cinch, along with leaving it further back, but his earlier rub is healed to new skin.
I'll know from his reaction to being there with other horses, and his behavior down the first miles of trail if he feels good. If he doesn't, I'll turn him around and it'll be time to call the vet and talk about whether it's time for more steps.
Sounds like a plan.
Becky
Thank you, there are some over by the pecan trees, in the far corner, and i guess she had herself a blast. Sugar is fat not starved so we don't need to worry about her having eaten them then!
Right, that is what I meant. For some reason they really seem to like to rub up against them:).
Becky
When we first diagnosed him with Navicular, there were lots of steps to try, and he's been operating two years on the lowest steps, the pads and Ixosuprine. He's got higher levels of treatment available to him, from regular Bute to Cortizone shots, to make him feel better. Beyond that there's nerving, but I hadn't really considered that an option before.
All this presupposes his recent instances of feeling 'off' have anything to do with his feet. The last one could have been nothing but the cinch, and the time before could have been all attitude :~D
Oh - and most important, the time before was the ride I forgot his custom pad.
At the time you diagnosed him with Navicular, wasn't it a "might" be navicular? did you do exrays?
Becky
That's wonderful! Have a great time. Isn't it suppose to be pretty hot in your area?
No - we didn't do xrays.... We just worked him before and after numbing first one then both heels. I guess his official diagnosis was 'heel pain'.
At the time, the conversation was "we can do xrays to confirm it, or we can treat him as if he has it and see if he gets better.
My farrier doesn't think he has navicular... he thinks he has a little arthritis is all. The vet spent a lot of time, flexing and extending his legs and watching him move... and lamenesses is his specialty. I saw the difference when he numbed the heel... I know that was it.
Ordinarily it should be hot, but we've had a real cool trend lately, waking up this morning to cool grey fog that will lift around 10-11... High predicted to be 78.
Either one, I've read that exercise is good for them, especially arthritis.
I still think he's playing with you:). The way he runs around the pasture with the others, and picks up his pace when you turn towards home.
I think your in the postion with Bay, I'm in with Rusty. Looking for stuff, and then finding every little ole glitch and reading way to much into it. Granted he did have a cinch sore, but it wasn't that bad of one and you adjusted as soon as you noticed, that shouldn't have been a problem. It's tough having a horse that your not sure what your dealing with.
Becky
It is not the plant, (which isn't very big right now, but I thought she may have layed down on it).
I went out just now and she is having a blast rubbing herself all over the red fence gate and i guess the color is coming off! I havent seen that happen before, the gate is only about a year old at that so I am surprised! I hope it comes off! : )
Oh - there's a lot of that. With Bay's age, I'm watching him very very intently for signs that he just can't do this any more. One of these years it will be time to retire him. So I should be carefully watching, but not inventing things. I don't need to invent things! You're right!
What's been going on with you and Harley? Are you riding this weekend?
Well we are off truck shopping this afternoon, I hope we have better luck than last time. We have decided to keep the old but reliable F350 diesel, 4 door, long bed, and buy something like a F150 4x4, 4 door and trade in my nearly new van. Kids wondered about the dvd player, but we'll just get them each an individual for those long journeys. We got Emma one about a month ago, that has games on it too and is fantastic! Means we get to listen to our music! (well i listen to mine and deaconjim just sighs! LOL).
Has Okie come home yet Cindydawg?
Tuffy, has your cat come home?
We are just about to have another litter of kittens so we are going to rename this place the local zoo~! LOL
If him being "off" has anything to do with his feet, I'd imagine that he'd feel stiff or bobble in the trot. Does he do any of that?
It's more subtle than that. Always has been with him. As a rule he seems sound in the trot if not as animated as he is when he's 'on'. What I'm seeing is just a difference in enthusiasm. It's very vague, but instead of him being coiled and chomping at the bit to "GO" all the time as is his norm, he's walking on a loose rein like he's going somewhere he doesn't want to go.
Hmmm... do you think it could be that he's now doing more work than he used to? How long are your trail rides?
Absolutely that's the major part of the concern, is how well he'll hold up to regular work, will he get back in condition, or will he just wear down.
He's feeling great so far. I put them all back in stalls to give pony her Quietex, and Bay his Bute, and I let him out last, which pissed him off enough to chase them around the paddock. He's doing a lot of macho head tossing and I think I'm going to have a lot of horse with me today.
