This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I'm the one who wouldn not put anything neoprene on my horse. I had a neoprene pad and it galled Belle so bad on her whithers that the hair grew back white. It happened the first day of a CTR, where I rode for 6+ hours.
At the clinic I went to they strongly recommended to avoid anything neoprene, if that means anything. They also believed the stuff was bad to gall a horse, pads or cinches.
I've come to the conclusion it works for some, but not for all. It might do just fine on your horse.
Becky
You just need a small tractor with a 5' bushhog. My FIL has a small Kubota that I've used the last two weekends to do both horse pastures. One of them is 5 acres and the other is probably two. It's great. It's small enough that I can load it onto the trailer and haul it to where ever I need it, mow and haul it back. It's 4WD too so that helps on hills. He bought it used so it wasn't too terribly expensive.
Oh - what about it do you think galled her? Heat? The thing I've wondered about them is whether they're hot. I'm told they work by making the horse sweat, making the skin slip easier under it. I would think they'd be very hot as a pad... not so much so as a cinch just because it's less surface area.
I've gone so many years with my leather one working just fine, I wonder if I shouldn't just make sure he's clean and the cinch is clean and oiled, and try show sheen right in the pit area.
Oh - I'd love to have that, but that's a few dreams from now!
IMO, they just build up too much heat under them, and the rubber texture grabs hold and pulls.
Didn't ecurbhs saddle come with a neoprene cinch? Heather had an Abetta saddle with a neoprene cinch that came with the saddle. I let her use it one time till she could get a differnt one. Before the ride was over Rocky was turning around and biting at it:). I was pretty sure it was the cinch that he wasn't liking, so we switched saddles and he stopped doing that. He didn't get galled, but I think it really pulls. JMO.
You'd just have to try one to find out if it will work.
Becky
ecurbh's came with a felt cinch.
A dogs life:')
I am dreaming of a 15 ft bat wing mower......... : )
I am surprised that you did not take up flying.
Oh, all the one's I've seen had neoprene.
Becky
You can crash when you get thrown or bucked off a horse too.
It is rare that anyone crashes or gets injured in an airplane like I posted pictures of. That type takes off slow, flys slow and lands slow. Just a thrill to be the pilot and enjoy flying.
BTW, you have to hand prop it to get it started, there are no electrics at all. : )
Thanks! I am too far behind to get caught up now. Just have to jump in every now and then.
As we were standing there talking about the next step the owner walked up to claim them. Someone had left a gate open and they wandered off looking for a new home.
It never entered my mind to take some pictures...
LOL...do you live in the country? did the horses look well cared for?
Becky
It never entered my mind to take some pictures...
Well, if you hang around me, that will have to change :~D
Well that's good. The sway backed one was probably just older.
Becky
That must have added some excitement to your day! :-)
I spent the morning calming my First Wife down but Dolly the Sharp Eyed Hunting Dog was a bit amused...
