The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

"A fabric covered airplane? (I know nothing about airplanes)"

Sure, some old airplanes were covered with a linen like fabric that was sewn onto the frame. Then the fabric was painted with a glue like substance called dope. Paint was applied over the dope and you have a fabric covered airplane.

Don't let the flying bug bite you, it is lots of fun but expensive.

Yes, but when you drive a truck that has airbrakes, you have an air supply for your own air driven impact wrenches. An air operated jack is nice too. Takes all the hard work out of a flat tyre........ : )

Shoot. We feasted the last time. Might as well be comfortable while you work, huh? The bailiff liked us. We fed him real good:')

What I hate though is that you always have an extreme on each end. One wants to throw the book and the other wants a walk. Then the rest of us have to work to meet them in the middle. It takes a lot of patience and endurance on my part ,esp when they get into the name calling. We actually had two guys get into it and one throw a chair once because one wanted a max sentence and another wanted probation.

My dad was a crop duster and he built wings. I and my little sisters (he called us his guys) helped him . We were the "glue" painters. We were probably doing "dope" before there was dope and didn't even know it. I remember the smell like it was yesterday:')

i turned the horses out together this morning so they could play awhile before it gets hot.

Rusty came over to be hosed off when they were done:)

My arena sure needs to be worked again :\

I'm trying to catch up on housework today. Mack is working again all day, so it's a good day to do that. The horses are getting their own exercise today.

Hope you have a good ride:), How hot is it going to be? It's already hot here.

This is a great shot!

So many times with digital cameras you miss that moment by 2 seconds.

It's foggy and 57 here right now... ~shrugs~ It's predicted to be overcast and 75. Will be muggy though, it's humid.

I've found I take better pictures if I get them in the view finder but watch them over the top of the camera. Watching them live it seems I can anticipate whats coming better, and can catch them. I still miss alot tho. I wish Rusty's head didn't blend in so much with the back ground. I think this picture says alot about these two. Notice Harley's ears are pinned, and Rustys are up. I've always thought Rusty was "playing" more then Harley when they act like this. He's a real pest in a friendly way, were as Harley is the more aggressive one. Probably why him and Rocky have such bad altercations when they get together and Rocky and Rusty don't.

I think you're right about how to anticipate the shots... I never look through the view finder, I watch the LCD display.

It's a neat moment for both of their personalities. So between Harley and Rusty, would Harley be on top of the pecking order?

It's funny about those two, I'm still not real sure whose at the top. I've seen Harley back down from Rusty. It may be that they just aren't together often enough to get it settled one way or another.

LOL....I think if Harley were human, he'd need some therapy:) Anger management. I've wondered if that is a result of him having been used for breeding some, then gelded. He's a very confused boy:) Probably being around Rocky has not helped at all,

There's your calendar. I don't know which I like best. Them playing or the water spray.

Rusty is a clown when you spray him with the hose:). I can get him to smile anytime.

Mine think I'm punishing them when I spray them with the hose... Even though, when it's hot it ~has to~ feel better when they're cooled off.

We've got horses caught... they went runnin' and buckin' this morning instead of wanting caught... even Bay bucked at me. ;~D Heh... I hope he didn't blow his whole energy wad :~D

LOL...horses are smart. Bay has figured out the routine:)

i was think about this last week when you posted that you didn't ride long because Bay seemed off, but picked up on the way back. I'd say Bay has figured out the game, and isn't thrilled with it. I'd be very careful about not being taken in anymore by his seeming offness, and not let him pick up like that on the way back. But once again, this is just my opinion on what you've said, I don't know the horse.

When I tried to spray Harley he took off, he won't stand and let you hose him either. Belle use to like to be hosed off, she'd turn this way and that, Rusty seems mostly to just like it in the face and chest, he'll side step when you spray his sides.

"Doesn't need any kind of brakes if it don't run ;~D"

Heh! You are right, maybe I need "Rope Start" planters..........

How did you like those Taylorcraft pics I posted? No electrics at all and hand prop to start the engine.

I took Cindy with me today. She hates water. It's a family project getting her bathed. She did so good though. I took her to see how she would do around SL (picture later). She did great. She stays ahead of her and SL was ok with her. I gave SL a bath. Cindy was just standing there. I though what the heck and sprayed her too. She just stood there! I couldn't believe it.

Oh and I forgot. I saw something today I hadn't seen and just wondering if yall knew what it was. I was bathing Sarah Lee and washing her tail. She kind of moved over but the rail stopped her and she was just standing there very calm. Suddenly, and it was so fast I almost didn't believe what I saw but it was like her belly and back blew out and up and she arched like a cat. Her legs didn't move though. It wasn't bucking. It stopped as fast as it happened. What was she doing?

Oh Bay knew what was up when we hooked the truck up! :~D

So - initial bad attitude aside, I believe Bay when he's off. When he's on he walks out and jigs and chomps to go faster the first five miles. He wasn't right today either, very pokey and very slow and careful down hills. I stopped to look at him halfway through and dangit if he didn't have a cinch rub. He's been very prone to them lately, and I really think it's what my dad said about his skin getting thinner as he's gotten older. Bob's old mule got like this too. I'm open to suggestions on what to do.... I can't imagine a cinch that would rub less than his does, but I wonder... I didn't hose him off today before the ride like I often do, perhaps it makes a difference that he is really clean underneath. I also wonder about something like show sheen that would help his skin and hair slide more without being oily that would attract dirt. I moved the cinch back and rode with it very loose on the way home, too.

He was better on the way back.
