Teflon Coating? (Vanity)
TBL

Posted on 07/14/2005 8:50:46 AM PDT by Trampled by Lambs

I've never posted this sort of thing before but I've been researching it and not found much real info on the net and I've always found folks here to be very knowledgable about all sorts of things so..

I hope this is not too inappropriate and that I put it in the right place.

I just bought a new Toyota Rav 4 and the dealer is pushing this Teflon coating that is supposed to keep the car looking like new without waxing for 5 years. I smell a scam but am not sure. If it works as advertised, it would be worth it but it seems more likely just another way for the dealer to suck a few hundred bucks more out of me.

After googling it for an hour or so, it seems most think like I do - it's a ripoff.

Anyone have experience with this?

Buy the teflon coating for your car only if you plan on frying eggs on the hood.

I wouldn't trust a dealer.

Call Toyota....they'll tell you that you don't need it.or they would have put it on the car..BTW..if you can..I'd find another dealer to take the car to for service. I wouldn't trust this one..

Almost all rust problems with cars start from the underside. The best preventative action is to hose out the wheel wells and bumper areas when washing the car and then run it down the highway to dry it oput.

My wife bought a Saturn with “permanent wax” in 93. It looked good for about 5-7 years, and then started to flake off the hood. It made the car look like absolute crap after that. I tried to remove it all with a pressure washer, but couldn’t remove some without risking damage to the paint.

I wouldn’t recommend it.

(I wouldn’t recommend anything a salesperson pushes 9 out of 10 times.)

At least they are asking permission to put their hands in your wallet. I bought a new car in 2003 and every dealer in the metro with the vehicle I wanted said they wouldn't sell it without a $200 aftermarket sunscreen coating. Sux to live in a state with no lemon laws, too.

Here is a notice board where people from all around the world discuss dealer applied Teflon coating.

Looks like the consensus is that it works OK, but has to be re-applied annually and does not live up to the hype.

Good luck!

Well, I'm on a tight budget so we use Pam non-stick spray instead. So far so good, has a great butter taste.

(Sorry I couldn't resist)

I used to sell cars. We made a few hundred extra profit on every car by insisting on some special undercoating. It's a scam, actually.

Good post.
