The Hobbit Hole XXIII - Let them go! Let them go!

Posted on 07/12/2005 8:11:36 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Let them go! Let them go!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

We had a similar one several nights ago, far enough away the thunder disipated before it reached us. LSA and I watched from the rear porch.

Heh. Had one the night of the return. I was watching the light show while waiting for the shuttle bus to show. Hmmm....I don't think it's a good idea to stand in one of those shelters while there's a light show going on.

One of the cats was reallllly interested when it started. Not scared. Probably 'cause he's not as bright as Gypsy. ;-)

I held him so he could see better and we just stood and watched for quite a good while. He was purring as hard as he could and his ears were going...just enjoying the show, I guess!

That's about it, you passed and apparently so did others in your batch. You'll see them get some drivers out and administer a 'field sobriety test', which includes walking a straight line, standing on one leg, touching their nose with their index finger and saying the 'abc's'. By then there usually isn't much doubt about it. The driver's arrested, car is towed, and breathalyer at the station before booking. They have sobriety check points periodically around here and generally near known drinking districts.

Oh, ok. It just seemed like an odd time of day to have a checkpoint, though I suspect it had something to do with the street fair. Very inconvenient for a good girl heading from church like me.

Of course, I did have a margarita with dinner, afterwards...

his ears were going...just enjoying the show, I guess! When we first moved up here, we had an Arizona alley cat. We took him to see the Plaza lights at Christmas and he loved 'em. That cat acted like he was stoned on the lights every year, it was great!! LSA

We used to have them all the time at Fort Gordon. They of course, also included some security nonsense, but it was really sobriety they were after. I was almost always on a weekend and always at night.

The real security checkpoints were 24 hour stops and everyone had to go through those... especially during heightened threatcon levels. Made us sometimes up to 45 minutes late for shift. Thing is, I would not have minded so much exept that if I were a terrorist, I would not need to bring in a truck. The base was not fenced!

Never been through a sobriety checkpoint, but I think they run counter to everything the Founders intended.

Yeah, that's what I pretty much thought. Inconvenience hundreds of people on the chance some of them might have been drinking?

Evenin' folkses... [sip] Happy Pre-Monday. :-P

Yes, that was a sobriety checkpoint. It's a bad sign if they are coming to your area. Nobody likes drunk drivers, but I think checkpoints are a little over the top.

I've had the priviledge of doing the field-sobriety test twice in my life, though not at a checkpoint. Was cold sober both times... but it was still a huge and somewhat unnerving hassle.

It would be kinda fun to be totally sober at one of those... and slur your words anyway.

There's that old joke about these cops sitting outside the local bar, waiting for drunks to leave... when they see this guy stumbling out and all over the parking lot. He keeps dropping his keys, and tries three or four cars before he finds the right one. The guy finally gets the car started, and commences to weave all over the road on his way out.

The cops give chase... finally pulled the guy over... but the guy totally passed all the tests... even the breathalyzer... One cop says "What's wrong with you-- you're completely sober... "

"Tonight" the guy says "I'm the designated decoy."

Yep, I've heard that one! Not sure it would amuse the cops...

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated...."
--Amendment IV

The problem with the Bill of Rights is that words like "unreasonable" leave too much wiggle-room... much of what we put up with on a daily basis would have been considered "unreasonable" by the Founders, IMHO.

Yeah, I think getting pulled over on my way from one nice law abiding activity to another is unreasonable.

No argument from me.

And if they use statistics to try to justify some overwhelming need for these draconian measures... My favorite: Drunk drivers are responsible for 40% of all accidents.

Sounds to me like sobriety is a bigger problem. :-)

You gotta love statistics.
