The Hobbit Hole XXIII - Let them go! Let them go!

Posted on 07/12/2005 8:11:36 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Let them go! Let them go!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I usually do as well, but this time I did so much walking, I WAY outdid my food intake, even though I felt like I ate like a horse! I got the chance to try some new foods; even octopus! It wasn't bad, just kind of chewy. I even learned that there was some tofu that I like; the deep fried kind!

My friend arranged for us to take a class on Japanese cooking. Turns out, the teacher was an author of a Japanese cookbook from 1975! She has a new one coming out in the fall. It was a fun class and I learned a lot. Now I just have to find a store that sells the foods we cooked. I went to a local Asian store today, but it was all Chinese foods, and they didn't have some of the things. I called a local Japanese restaurant today, and asked if there were a Japanese grocery close by. The lady I talked to said there is a Korean store in Worcester, and they sell some Japanese foods. I hope to go by there tomorrow.

Edit: [Yeesh... I've been spending like the last hour and a half or more trying to get the stinkin' wifi in this place to work. Maybe ~this~ time it will actually work.]

I'm feeling pretty happy about *finally* nailing that spyware bastidge that's been bugging me for the last n number of weeks.

Finally found the source of my misery: Direct Revenue (.com) of NY, NY.

They are as vile as pig vomit:
http://netrn.net/spywareblog/archives/2005/04/06/lawsuit-filed-against-direct-revenue/

I wish only the worst of intestinal bleeding abcess infections to these foul parasites.

I am now free from them. Nothing that I know of could have found them. Not Ad-aware, not Spy-bot, not MS Antispyware... nothing.

Had to print out about five pages of 'structions but somebody finally figured out how to get rid of these stinking tapeworms of humanity.

:-) Happy now. :-)

With regard to the Direct Pig Vomit Revenue People... it would be completely WRONG for me to post their actual mailing address and PHONE and FAX numbers. That would be wrong:

Direct Revenue LLC
107 Grand Street
3rd Floor
New York, NY 10013
V: 646.613.0376
F: 646.613.0386

So I won't do that. :-)

Excellent!

Well, I spoke with Celeste earlier. She's just devastated. She literally thought they would break away from CHEF and everyone would say "Oh, that's just hunkey dorry." It's a major catastrophe so far and there are a lot of hurt feelings and anger. It's like the worst church split you've ever seen. I coulda told them so...but no one asked me.

I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of lawsuit doesn't come from it. Big CHEF (as we call the umbrella group) is having a meeting tomorrow...Steve is going to attend. We'll find out what they intend to do since all the BA CHEF leadership has "resigned" in their words.

Celeste isn't real happy with me because I didn't just re-name the egroup (which has 53 members) after the new support group. I told her that wasn't fair because it was a CHEF egroup and some people might want to stay with BA CHEF. I set up a whole different egroup for the new support group.

Celeste is in the big thick middle of a really terrible thing and she had no idea what she was heading in to...a handful of people made this terrible decision and she was one of them. I don't know what she was thinking.

The president of the new support group, that used to be the president of BA CHEF has conveniently gone on vacation just as the you-know-what has hit the proverbial fan, so to speak.

It's just a mess and the whole thing angers me that it happened and breaks my heart at the same time.

There's blue screens from a memory address fight with winlogin.exe

Then there's constant popups from an outfit called "Aurora" and whatever site they're pimping at the moment, even though I have popups disabled... unstoppable installs of something called "WinFixer" (which isn't) and a really annoying little exe process bastidge called "nail.exe" that creates randomly-named processes in RAM that if you kill them just re-spawn as newly-randomized names.

I hate them. But "hate" is such a weak word in these circumstances. "Hatred" is so weasely and mild compared to the colon-stomping brain-squishing-through-fingers sort of violence that I wish for these lowest of life forms.

I would volunteer to spend my own eternity in hell, if only I could also make sure that there was a special place prepared in that hell for these rot-worms and I could be the one tormenting these insufferable buttmunches myself.

Beyond that... I have little opinion. :-)

Interesting exercise - but gravity at the surface of the earth (9.8m/s/s) is predicated on having all the mass of the earth under your feet. We don't know how far down the mines of Moria go, nor how deep inside the earth the bridge is. Acceleration would be less the deeper you go. I think it is safe to assume that they were deep enough to shave a decimal point or two off the 9.8 figure and say that Gandalf fell some distance less than 9.59 mi.

Also we can't really assume the earth had the same structure in that age or that G (constant) was the same because heaven knows Manwe et al have mixed things up in the past.

Good morning...

Well rats!

Just when I think I'm making some sort of sense of the world, some Vala has to come along and muck up my carefully crafted* calculations and leave me wondering about my grasp of reality!**

Arthur Dent said something like that-- in the books, anyway.

It was a fun exercise, and that there could be any shred of reality to it at all is satisfying.

*I could not type that with a straight face. "Carefully crafted" codswallop :)

**My first clue about my grasp on reality should have been that I was trying to calculate the fall of two invented "supernatural" beings through a geologically unlikely space.

This is, of course, an utter load. Terminal velocity for a skydiver is, I believe, in the 300 MPH range. Assuming the terminal velocity of falling Istari whilst in close combat with Balrogs is 304.08 MPH ('cuz it's conveniently in my spreadsheet), that rate would have been reached 14 seconds into the fall; 106 seconds later they would impact the subterranean lake at a depth of merely 9.59 miles bbl (below bridge level).

You used to have a poster with the blueprints for the Enterprise...didn't you?

So what's the fix? I've got something similar. I have popups disabled, am running a firewall and I STILL get some of this crap. I've seen "Aurora" too.

And when I go back in to check, something has turned off the block popups box.

FWIW I see no need to sacrifice your own eternity. These people make the Antichrist look like a good guy.
