The Hobbit Hole XXIII - Let them go! Let them go!

Posted on 07/12/2005 8:11:36 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Let them go! Let them go!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

*sniff* I love that poem.

I grew up in Robert Frost territory. His poems are about people and places and things I can relate to.

See ya later, I'm off to the store.

You know the produce section really is a meat market...

I *HATE* that poem! It's good, but I hate it. I got thrown out of an English class in HS over it.

I dared to disagree with the teacher. He thought the last line was full of regret. Phooey.

According to the Evil Overlord's List, anyone who has Global Domination should not have offspring. They're always plotting against you or falling for the Hero.

He probably was one of the ones who thought "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" was about suicide too, right?

I guess we can't know for sure what the poet thought...but that was an interpretation I didn't hear until recently.

I still don't know what I really want. But I think it includes fame, fortune, and a beach house in Hawaii.

Is that the one that says "Stopped into a church, I passed along the way....???"

What?

Oh...nevermind...

I don't really recall - probably because I didn't get kicked out of class over it.

All I know was that I was supposed to be rich and thin by now, but I have to settle for just being devastatingly handsome...

I'd have to get orgy friends. ... Naw, I wasn't ready for it." ;-)

Reminds me of one of my favorite Lewis Grizzard jokes. "You know why Junior Leaguers don't like with group sex? All those Thank You notes!"

Sorry.

I wouldn't call it regret, but there is an element of wondering what was down the other road. After all, it is titled "The Road Not Taken." But he is satisfied with his choice.

I don't want fame. Don't want fortune. Wouldn't mind visiting Hawaii, but I wouldn't want to live there...it'd make it less meaningful, I think.

I wouldn't mind having something published eventually. And it'd be nice to always have a decent place to live and enough expendible income for the occasional treat. That's my dream. That and a place with room for dogs and chickens and a garden. ;-) 2J has the right idea, I'm thinkin'.

And then there was that cult thing that really screwed things up...

I wish I had a "cult thing" in my past. It really sounds very exciting. ;~D

"Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" is my favorite. I think I've recited it for my wife on occassion.

No chickens. Garden and dogs, yes. The fortune is negotiable, I figger someone like me can't help it if I become world famous.

Beach home in Australia, then?

Well, we can't have it all...

Sigh. I get to wait another half hour for the privelege of spending the rest of the afternoon hauling boxes. They know my schedule by now... oh well. Hopefully I can move my usual Wednesday chat-with-friend to Thursday.

*sigh*

I love winter evening walks. And that poem brings back memories. People can put a dark spin on it if they want, but for me, it's just about savoring the beauty of a snowy night.
