The Hobbit Hole XXIII - Let them go! Let them go!
Posted on 07/12/2005 8:11:36 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Let them go! Let them go!
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

I like your tagline.Yeah. I'm tired of watching NASA brass cross their fingers and hold their breath, hoping that *this* time maybe everything will go right, and seven astronauts won't end up as ugly smears across the countryside.
They've done nothing since Columbia, and it shows. Time to take their money away and turn out the lights.
Party's over.

Stupid NASA. What, precisely, have they accomplished since the Moon?
I think at this point they've done more harm than good.

What, precisely, have they accomplished since the Moon?Very little in manned spaceflight. The planetary flybyes were cool, and Cassini was great. But those weren't really NASA; that was JPL.

Stupid NASA. What, precisely, have they accomplished since the Moon? Dang... I've never thought of it that way. Dang... since the moon landing, what have I really accomplished that compares to that? Dang... well... nothing really. I mowed the grass last week.

Stupid NASA. What, precisely, have they accomplished since the Moon? That's pretty funny... really... considering that you've grown up entirely in a world where going to the moon was always something thats already been done.
Seems to me that we need to push the envelope again.

Yeah, but I don't have umpty-billion dollars and brilliant minds working for me. I respect the work they did, I just think they... settled for a heck of a lot less than they should have.
And teaching an entire generation that the government is the only way to get into space.... now that's an actual failing, rather than just not achieving as much as I'd like.

I'm all for space exploration, as you should know if you've read my posts here. Current-day NASA is not the way to do it, IMHO. If nothing else proves it, it's the fact that they have done nothing in the past 17 months to correct the problem that brought down Columbia. They just waited around long enough to make it look like they were doing something, then put Discovery up there, hoping that nothing would go wrong *this* time.
That's no way to conquer the stars.
Not to mention that farce of lift-off delay, when they decided that while they didn't know what caused the sensor to give the wrong reading, it wasn't really important enough to pay attention to. Just like the foam that struck Columbia's wing on lift-off wasn't important enough to pay attention to.
Pathetic.
Anyway, I'm going to bed.

Congrats on your live fire! I have a test event at the end of the month, and get to spend next week TDY to plan it. More miles for my frequent flyer accts! Ah well.
Might go pick some black berries myself over at that Menonite farm this evening or next.

Gooooooooood morning! Izzit Friday yet?
The cold front came through and I'm a happier camper as a result. The garden got some rain, the trees got some spare leaves shaken loose. My tomaters *still* aren't turning. Could be any of a number of variables - soil too rich, too much water, not enough light, possibly too crowded. *sigh* I live for tomaters.
In the meantime I'm scaring up recipes for green tomatos. Fried Green Tomatos is at the top of the list. I also found a recipe in a South Texas Mexican cookbook for a green tomater salsa/relish served with scrambled eggs. It sounded interesting. (Hope they don't mean tomatillos when they say "green tomatos"...)

Seems to me that we need to push the envelope again. Such efforts (space or otherwise) often define generations and revitalize cohesiveness in our culture.

Morning!
The varmints got my tomatoes, I think. I had green ones before the trip and nothing after. Looks like they've left the peppers alone though.

got to b!%$# slap some MPs,Ooooh, I'd pay good money to see that, and even more money to have a chance to do it myself. Details, please.

I haven't seen any reviews of it. I wonder if Johnny Depp is any good as Willy Wonka?

We attended a private Japanese cooking lesson today. With the 3 girls, Gina's son and the two of us, we had the six needed for the class. It was extremely interesting. I ate some stuff I probably never would have tried. We thought it was just a class to learn to make
onegiri, little rice triangles filled with stuff, or of just flavored rice. Turns out, she had us make several dishes, including Najiki (a sea vegetable) and Carrots, a scrumptious squash dish, a dish made with ground chicken, a creamy sesame paste, and some fresh Miso Soup. I never thought I liked Miso Soup, but this was terrific!
I will impress Paul and David, while they're home, with my cooking abilities. I even got them, and myself the forms needed to do the little rice logs made with the same rice mixture used for theonegiri, or omnosubi, as it is also called. The lady who taught the class, Elizabeth Andoh, is just finishing a new cookbook, so I'm gonna see if Gina can get one autographed for me.

I think letting the soldiers' families know about it, and how to donate, is a great idea, Hair!

There's no earthly way of knowing
Which direction we are going
There's no knowing where we're rowing
Or which way the river's flowing
Is it raining?
Is it snowing?
Is a hurricane a-blowing?
Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing
Are the fires of hell a-glowing?
Is the grisly reaper mowing?
Yes! the danger must be growing
'Cause the rowers keep on rowing
And they're certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing!
I'm already having one of ~those~ days. Can you tell?
