The Hobbit Hole XXIII - Let them go! Let them go!

Posted on 07/12/2005 8:11:36 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Let them go! Let them go!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

There's no Q on that list. Guess there aren't enough Q names. Should we start a pool on how many letters will get used?

Seriesly, Sam, every time I hear about these guys I worry about you Florida folk.

Here is the list of retired hurricane names. They retire names if they've been "particularly destructive."

But I got such a good deal!

;-)

Mornin'! Been bidding on eBay for some of the jedi's curriculum. Ugh...even paying half-price (including S&H, which is the most I'll pay for used curriculum) it's gonna hurt.

But not as bad as full price, and maybe I'll get a deal! One book, for example...my max bid is around $5 and it's going so far for .99! It sells new for around $15.

No hurricanes here either, though it's drizzling a little.

That's good.... it'll keep the dust down on trail this afternoon.

Heh!

I anticipated selling the jedi's old books and they were threatened with bodily harm if they wrote in their textbooks! LOL I put book covers on them and everything!

The thing with BJUP, you have to have the corresponding text to go along with the satellite feed...so you have to make sure the six digit number of the book matches what you're supposed to order. The book you might think you need might be an older edition that doesn't correspond or even a brand new edition that doesn't correspond. (Usually they update the feed when a newer edition comes out, but sometimes there is a lag.)

The thing is, people don't seem to realize the importance of posting that six digit number in their description! Slows me down, cause I gotta ask. About half my inquiries were not the right curriculum and the other half were and I bid.

I'm bidding on 6 items and watching 2 others.

I Googled a few Q names:

Quinn, Quigley, Quentin, Quincy – Queenie, Quella, Querida, Quinevere for starters. There must be some other reason for not using Q names other than availability.

I even know a guy named Quinton, Captain Quinton Dieterle, master of the "Cutting Edge," a charter fishing boat out of Miami.

Capt. Quinton

The "Cutting Edge"

One thing about living in Florida, there is going to be a hurricane at your house, sooner or later.

I'm just hoping the next one won't be as powerful as the last, 13 years ago.

I've told these stories haven't I?

I was deep sea fishing in the Gulf the day before Andrew hit. I was the only one who wasn't pukin' over the side.

Years later I worked with a den leader who had moved here from Florida. They sat in their bathroom while Andrew destroyed everything. She had a "Club" on the steering wheel of her car. Literally the only thing that survived was the club.

The thing about hurricanes is that the nightmare isn't just when it actually hits. (Even though that is the most terrifying part).

It's a nightmare to get ready for it and an even worse nightmare once it's gone.

I'll never forget how the absolute worst in people came out after that storm. Speeding through intersections where the lights had blown down, selling bags of ice for $5+, stealing generators from neighbors, looting, etc.

There were and are a lot of good people around here, but probably less now in Miami than there were then. A lot of them left after Andrew.

So now, we have a lot of new residents that arrived post-Andrew. I worry for them the most since they really don't know what a real hurricane is.
