The LFA BOD & the ILR
What can't be cured must be endured.
(I'm in a cliche'd mood, sorry!)
Try this thread.
I'm a 4-H Mom, and I run the 4-H ping list on FR.
My daughter shows llamas and right now we are getting ready for the big 4-H County Youth Fair.
Oh, you just raise llamas then? :-)
Actually, we borrow a llama from the 4-H leaders. ( they have over 40)
Living in town now, for various reasons, so we have no room.
Cool. I noticed Gabz was on the list. She is one of my favorite freepers. She always has great things to say.
Oh that's right you moved, I remember now.
I know people are kinky, but llama spit? I thought I'd heard it all...
Female llamas are nice? But boys need to mature (2 yrs) before you'll trust them with kids? 25 is a pretty decent lifespan. Do you ride them?
I know they're beasts of burden and very strong, but have no concept of their fighting off hawks and coyotes.
S'okay!
Had to be done.
Caitlin hated the country and the schools weren't good for her where we were. She was SO lonely and had no friends other than 4-H, and that was only once a month, except in summer.
She's a whole new Kid here. She's got the pool, and the ice-cream stand, and the party store that sells treats, and a whole passle of gal-pals who clear out my fridge on a regular basis.
And, wonder of wonders, she actually LIKES going to school here.
Then it's worth it! And when she leaves home, you've still got the rest of your life.
She's got the pool, and the ice-cream stand, and the party store that sells treats.
Now that's my kind of place:)
Sorry, I was unclear.
You should geld males at age 2 so they stay gentle with kids, especially little kids. 4-H actually has rules that after the llama is age 2, you are NOT allowed to show an intact male unless you are of a certain age ( I think you have to be 14, but don't quote me on that) An intact male is BIG , very strong, and agressive.
The little kids simply can't handle them.
Before they turn two, they are just cute fuzzy little guys and eager to please.
MOST females are sweet, IF you take time to handle them and work with them.
Only a small child can ride a full-grown llama. Llamas are mostly hair, and while they do bear burdens, they can't carry a whole lot.
You CAN team them, though, and make them pull a small cart, and you can ride in THAT.
(Caitlin and I don't do that. The equipment is expensive, and it's very labor intensive to learn)
A pair of llamas will actually charge at coyotes, and yeah, spit at them. teh coyotes RUN. I think it's the smell.
Buzzards are cowards, and the farmers hate them because they wil tear out the eyes of new-born lambs while they are still alive.
Llamas chase buzzards off just fine.
Gabz is very good.
I like her.
(Ping to Gabz because I am talking about her! )
I keep telling myself that.
She's telling ME that she wil never leave, though!
Now I know your secret:).
He he! She'll feel differently when she's 18, I bet!
Not sure.
She's mildy developementally delayed
(Asperger's)
She really LIKES her new home.
Thank you!
Got that book-marked!
Oh, well. Whatever works. At least you wouldn't be alone in your old age. Some of mine, I think I'll have to change the locks on.
