Shut down errors, XP

I stay current on updates, but have issues when I turn this idiot box off. I only turn off power when I hear thunder coming in, although I restart at regular intervals. Today I had to unplug everything for over an hour, then the system came back in good shape. Is there a solution other than just unplugging everything? Use little idiot words, please.

You didn't do a very good job in describing the problem, I'm afraid.

Are you just shutting off the power or are you shutting the whole thing down and letting it turn itself off?

Can you expand on what your problem is? Can you describe your setup (RAM, CPU, laptop? Desktop?)

I can run this thing for months with a daily restart. When I hear thunder coming in I shut things down, when I try to come back in I often get error messages, I choose set to default and the screen goes black. After about 30 minutes unplugged, the system will come back 100%.
My rig is a desktop put together by my kids and their geeky friends, normally it is A-1. The error on shutdown thing is a new problem.
Thanks for all the comebacks, maybe with practice I will get smart enough to be more specific. There are moments when I wish I had not got addicted to this damned thing, can't handle the withdrawal process, LOL

get a real UPS (uninterruptible power supply)with back up battery capacity. Then you will have the option of not shutting down.

Can you describe one of the error messages? What does it say.

Are you using a multiple port USB hub? (uh oh, sorry but I had to ask...LOL)

Have you checked for viruses or spyware? Have you defragged the harddrive recently?

Do you have all the latest XP updates?
