What makes your urine orange/yellow vs. clear?

Lots of vitamin C.

Pale vs. dark urine is a function of hydration. A bright yellow can be achieved with Vitamin C.

Drink more water... when I used to take alot of supplements and vitamins when I was a major jock I would have foul urine. Not just orange urine but it also had an odor. Drink more water.

I've heard if it's clear, that can be an indication of drinking too much water.

Water soluble vitamins can make it very yellow. Also certain foods (and I never believed I would be asked about it so I didn't take notes) have also turned in a golden yellow.

I seem prone to some sort of infection that turns it milky/cloudy in the winter unless I drink cranberry juice nearly every day.

Probably a place like WebMD could give you better info.

Howard Dean is a doctor, theoretically, since he doesn't have much to do, you might throw him a line and ask him.

This will color some bodily wastes, but not urine, IIRC.

Real simple, when you do a lot of sweating and don't drink enough water the urine may stay in the bladder for 10-12 hours or more. Rule of thumb, when working in the heat drink enough water to urinate at least once an hour, any thing less is a sign of dehydration which can cause muscle spasms or loss of grip in your hands and fingers, important to know if you climb ladders and structures.

OK... So some people may be getting "pissy" about this thread, however, it's an interesting subject. If you take plenty of vitamins, your urine should be bright yellow to orange. Your body is disposing of the excess vitamins through your urine. If your urine suddenly becomes pale, that indicates that your body is now in need of those excess vitamins. (Either that or you've just had a lot of beer!)

...so said my high school biology teacher. (Except for the part about the beer; he didn't say that.)

Your kidneys remove excess water and filter out junk.

The fluid is the water and the yellow is the junk. There's always water, but not always junk.

...and I just told another thread I was going to bed.

Hey, we had a playgroup of moms where 7 or 8 of us were pregnant at the same time. At one of the playdates, we all took our turn going to the potty where each of us peed into little dixie cups of Drano. If the mixture stayed blue/green, you were having a boy. I think brown or something crazy like that meant a girl.

Stay at home moms can be entertained like this for hours. :)

A friend of mine slipped all his buddies a bladder infection drug that turns your pee a bright electric blue, on a camping trip.

He didn't say anything... he just wanted to see if they would bring it up. ;~D
