The place with the most guns, and the least laws and taxes.
Probably Texas.

No seriously, try Florida. As best I can tell, Florida is OK if you don't own a house. The panhandle is probably good.

Oklahoma City is nice, although it doen't really have public transportation. However, that is a good thing.

Think about Las Vegas, Texas or Florida. Probably not much good "public transportation " though. Gotta have a car in most places in America.

I was going to suggest New Hampshire, until you said that you needed public transportation. If you don't have a car, it's hard to live outside a major city.

You simply could not do better than North Carolina. Raleigh will be the easiest place for you to get set up (plenty of jobs, housing, etc.)

Have you considered moving to Alabama? We have one of the lowest costs of living anywhere in the US. I live in Huntsville, Alabama and wouldnt move to another state for any amount of money. We have all four seasons, and we also have mountains, lakes, and total beauty everywhere. You ought to look into it! (Plus, the people are great here, we carry the republican vote every time!!!)

Rhode Island would be the best place to live if only everyone who lives here was gone.

Denver CO...just don't venture to far North...you might find yourself in Boulder (No! No! No!)

If you were looking for good baseball, I would recommend St Louis.

Maine is nice but taxes there are terrible. So forget Maine. I would say rural New Hampshire or Wyoming, or maybe Montana (some part of Montana are already californicated, so is part of Jackson, Wyoming)
