New M1 Carbine

Posted on 06/11/2005 10:01:31 AM PDT by 95ssimpala

Has anyone shot the Auto-ordinance M1 carbine? I want a shooter more than a collector’s item and a grand for a Fulton Armory rebuild is a little much. Shopping around most of the decent GI carbine I’ve seen run around the same price as a new one. I’ve read mixed reviews of other Auto-ordinance products before they were taken over by Khar and none on the carbine. I would like to know about accuracy, reliability, and GI parts interchangeability.

I don't know much about them, but I'm sure someone here does.

You're not talking about that .30 caliber pistol round are you?! If you're going to buy a short .30 cal, by DSA's SA-58 carbine. It shoots a "real" .30 caliber round....7.62x51 (.a.k.a. 7.62 NATO, or .308 Winchester).

Gun talk and questions thread.
Grab the crew, Auto-ordnance M-1 is the subject of discussion.

I can't answer your question but I have had some experience with Auto Ordinance pistols.

The first one was a .45 auto. It jammed regularly. I discovered the extractor had no tension at all. Instead of sending it back, I happened to have a GI spare and installed it which cured the problem.

I next had a 10mm. It actually shot better than either of the Colt Delta Elites I had. When cleaning the barrel, I noticed a slight defect (it looked like a slight crater, maybe 2mm across inside one groove). I suspect it was a cast barrel and there had been a slight bubble in the steel.

I wrote Auto Ordinance and they shipped me a new barrel and requested I return the old one.

As luck would have it, the new one was not as accurate. I phoned the plant and talked to a supervisor who clearly knew what he was doing. He told me to just keep the original barrel which I did.

I guess their quality control could have been better but they were good to deal with.

We're talking about the classic M-1 carbine here...right? The std projectile is .308, 110gr hardball...shot from a straight walled casing?

No, but I bought a Springfield Armory M1A National Match a couple of years ago and its sweet. Worth every penny.

Dunno offhand.

Was you experience with Auto Ordinance before or after Kahr Arms bought them?

Both of mine were purchased around 1990.

Don't have data on that yet, but I bet Eaker could blow one up.

Hmmmm...time to break out the reloading data for the .30 carbine cartrige. As I remember, it's a real weakling. But I'll confirm it shortly. :-)

That's a hefty price tag though.

DSARMS

And I agree with you, the .30 M1 Carbine was meant to replace the M1911. AS IF! Typically they are worthless and tend to jam a lot. I put them into the mousegun category. If you shoot somebody with one and IF he finds out about it, he's gonna be a mite bit angry. Then you'll have to stand there all day and ARGUE with him!

I favor this over the dsarms everytime: SOCOM 16

1990.

I believe that was a few years before Kahr bought them out.

Supposedly AO's quality control has improved since the acquisition, although I personally don't have any experience with them.

"...but I bet Eaker could blow one up."

Well, that falls under 'special ability', like my death touch with technology.
At least Eaker doesn't get stuff to speak backwadrs and levitate before blowing up.
(But no fair, he gets stuff to 'splode spectacularly.)

I believe it about teh paintball guns, found them as well.
*chuckle*

Hmm.. I know a few woodchucks I could scare the living daylights out of with it.

$639 is kinda hefty.
