Vanity - Which music donwload service should I get for my son

I apologize profusely for posting this but I have no one else to ask. My 13 year old son received a MP3 player for his birthday and everyday is asking for more songs. I need to get a music download service...such as Rhapsody but would like opinions about which one to get, prices, etc. I know you guys are smart so please help me out!! TIA!

I think walmart has the cheapest downloads. I use itunes but I've found that the selection is not the best.

I dont think they come with a fee or anything if you dont download any songs, so why not get all of em? That way your ready for the next time one comes out with a "drink grog, get free Itunes" type deal. And you can compare them yourself, and not go with recommendations from strangers who may not like anything your kids do.

My daughter uses Limewire. Downloaded from internet it costs $30 and you get no ads (like with the free version). So far, she's happy with it.

I've been using Napster and am generally happy with the selection and price of music. Unlike iTunes that basically locks you into using an iPod, Napster uses Windows Media formatting so the music can be transferred to more than just an MP3 player. For instance, I use my PDA as an MP3 player because I don't want to carry around multiple devices when one can do the job of many. My PDA has WM, so it will play Napster files. This would not be the case with iTunes.

I use MSN because there is no subscription fee, but the selection is so-so. I heard Yahoo is much better and cheap at only $5/month with unlimited downloads. This may work better for your son.

i've used rhapsody/real player ... if you subscribe to superpass you get two free downloads per month (which isn't very many, i know), plus the top ten on the rolling stones list are only 49 cents (if you can stand the music). But there are the usual billion songs, so it's tough NOT to find something you like. Rhapsody/Real Player has the option of making the volume equal across all tracks (when burning them) so songs don't blow your ears out or come out to soft in relation to the others ...

Gnucleus is a free, open source gnutella client like LimeWire that does not contain spyware like LimeWire does.

You guys are great!!! I knew you would have some good ideas. My son likes everything from Christian rock to "Peter Frampton Comes Alive". There is so much to choose from that this could cost me a years salary to get him everything he wants to hear.

Dunno what your opinion is on P2P filesharing programs (like Limewire, Gnutella, Napster, et al.) but Ares is the P2P filesharer I use. Free, no spyware, comes with a browser toolbar search (that part is optional, you don't have to install it to use Ares) And I've gotten everything from Doobie Brothers to Johnny Cash to Disney soundtracks to AC/DC (yeah my music tastes vary wildly *L*)
