U2 actually wasn't that bad in the early 80s but they did go downhill pretty quick. Same with REM who peaked in '87 or so.

The U2 of the early 80s was pretty cool. And don't be dissing penny loafers either (unless there were actual pennies, or unless they were worn with white socks).

I still have my Bass Weejuns and am patiently waiting for them to come back into style. I loved those shoes. And, U2 was an awesome band for their first 3 albums. Songs like Gloria, I will follow, Two hearts beat as one, etc. were all great music, the band died shortly thereafter.
