I need some advice about where to move

OK I have had it with life here in the Peoples Republic Of Massachusetts. The break has been coming for a while but the corporate AND Liberal lunacy coupled with the high cost of living here have finally taken their toll and I'm ready to escape. I am going up to coastal Maine for a few days to detoxify from the Boston / New York area but then I will be looking for work and housing elsewhere.

I have worked in nonclinical research (mostly Toxicology) for the last six years and I have a degree in Animal Science.

I want to get to an area where I can own a country place and not have to deal with the city unless absolutely necessary (I don't think I could take hearing another minute of cRap music). I have looked around at real estate listings in eastern Maine and the prices there are feasible if I could secure a salary similar to what I make now. (around 45k)

Anybody out there have any suggestions?

I know a great place but it is a secret. We plan to keep it that way.

Give Michigan a bit of a think. Granted, we're technically "blue," but that is primarily Detroit and Lansing. The weather isn't dramatically different than what you have in MA, and the cost of living is certainly less. MSU, in spite of being a typical lib campus, is a great ag school, especially when it comes to animal husbandry and vet sciences. A 15-20 minute drive out of Lansing/East Lansing puts you in some very "red" counties.

Besides...we need more conservatives here! C'mon!!! Tip the balance!

If you are a Mainiac, What do you know about the cat ferry that runs to NS from Bar Harbor? It looks like it could save me about a day's drive.

Three years ago I went through this. I had lived in Louisville, KY for 35 years, had retired and wanted to get away from the big city life, all the traffic and the cold weather.

Researched for about six months. And then I found Find Your Spot as previously mentioned by Patriot from Philly in comment #6.

Find Your Spot recommended several places I had already researched and visited. But it also recommended Aiken, SC as the number one choice.

Long story short, I now live in Aiken and love it here. Check out Find Your Spot.

"But nobody listens to me anyway. I'm just a geezer living in the People Republic of Oregon"

Ah, but a very accurate Geezer. Here in the Freepdom, it was pointed out the code words used by the commies. I then noted most of the high level jobs in state gov't often include words like "sustainability", "building a consensus" and the all important "Stakeholders".

I would suggest that you do NOT move to Washington State. If you think the Massholes are annoying, try dealing with the granolas who don't bathe for a week.

From what you say about Seattle women, one should avoid that area like the plague. I was thinking about that yesterday when huddled with my Venezuelan women here in sunny South Florida.

The Boulder, CO area is booming in bio-tech, and people LOVE their animals out here. If you can stand all the Libs in Boulder, it's beautiful and the cost of living is not unreasonable. You could look at some of the outlying areas like where we live in Longmont, Broomfield, Westminster. The outerlying areas are much more conservative than Boulder. After all, CO is a red state.

Find your spot is a great site. I took the survey and got back some of the areas I am considering and quite a few I had not even thought of such as Chapel Hill NC and a few places in Montana.

My background is with tox and pharmacology using rodent models though I have a smattering of experience with larger animals (NHP, Dog, Livestock) I also have my LATG. If there are any freepers out there that work at a lab that's hiring, mail me and I'll send you my particulars.

Thanks for all the advice it was very helpful in finding the brighter, redder, world that is available

If you work with rodents, and you like the Maine coast, you should check out Jackson Labs in Bar Harbor.

God Luck!

I suggest Boise, Idaho, since I just moved here about a month ago.

Not a recruiter...didn't even go to TAMU. I am a U of H grad. But after living in Bryan/College Station for 30 some years, you tend to see the quality of the school and students.
