Euro (Silican/Belgian with Canadian citizenship) songbird Lara Fabian wrote "Les Homericains" to protest American foreign policy in her recent CD. Below are the original lyrics in French:
=============
============= Translation from babelfish follows (with some correction from yours truly):
Men , When they dance as nobody, When they sing , sounds from Astaire to Morrisson , The (Ame)Ricans , When they throw out good wine , They throw away bread , They are no longer our friends ,
Just like us , They do evil , Just like us , They do good , As one can be animal , One can also be human , To be homéricains ,
Men , When Michael Moore knocks , On a system which "Bush on" , From Kabul to Enron, The (Ame)Ricans , When they implant themselves with fake breasts, The fast food joints at every corner, Fake meat in their hands,
Just like us , They do evil , Just like us , They do good , As one can be animal , One can also be human , To be homéricains ,
Men , When the lesson whom they give , Is to be like only one man , With the foot of the phantom chase,
Ame(Ricans), When in the name of God , They invade their neighbor, to be able to fill the gas tank,
==== Sorry I didn't finish translating the last few parts, but you get the picture. Kabul, Enron, "Bush on", "in the name of God", "Invade their neighbor".
These folks are just as dim as our Dems.
France is under the false impression that the USA gives a damn what they think about our affairs.
exactly. Along with a lot of western europe.
She has Canadian citizenship... I wonder if she has ever wondered how Canada managed to repel the US invasion to steal Canada's oil, where is the big Canadian military buildup that keeps us at bay... Where is the big Mexican military deployment that keeps us from scooping up Mexico's oil fields?
These people never stop to think about what they think. Its hard to take them seriously; in fact, its impossible.
I happen to be a fan of Lara's and the song isn't and wasn't meant to be Anti-Bush or Anti-American. The lyrics also include Europeans as being "Les Homericains" as well. Lara is not Anti-American. I'm surprised this hasn't been posted a long time ago. Her CD "9" which this song is on has been out for some months now. I actually like the song. It has a rock edge to it and it's not at all that bad as you all may think.
Well you goofs are always bitchin about meat being murder, so what are you crying about?
European diplomacy = fail to do anything, but sing a song about how you feeeeeeeeeeel about it.
I'm hopin' the alligator eats the smug, elitist French last...it's kinda fun to watch their self-rightious indignation eat them from the inside out :o)
Now where did I put that excellent Australian wine list?
Detester, c'est plus facile que comprendre.
I'll bite. I don't speak French, so you'll have to help me...
I'll give her the benefit of the doubt if you'll do the honors of explaining the lyrics...
Thanks in advance.
Hello, American Butterfly. I also happen to be a fan of Lara for 10 years and have practically all of her CDs. How else would I have come across the song? However, I respectfully have to disagree with you that the song is not anti-American. The Euros think Americans are "religious right-wingers" with the God-given right to invade other countries. That was basically what she sang.
Actually, I agree with that part. I'm just offended that she thinks thats a bad thing...
Thanks. Well, basically, she's talking about how when we went to war and everyone kept saying "Oh, I hate you Europeans, I hate you Americans". How we boycotted French things and how we were looked upon from Europeans. She's saying that we are no better than each other. We all have faults. We're all "Les Homericains".
In the song she's chastising both Europe and America, but, in a tongue in cheek kind of way. If you had the CD and watched the DVD that came with it that features the making of "Les Homericains", you'd definitely think it was funny instead of mean-spirited.
The song to me is very tongue in cheek. I did not take it seriously.
I'll take your word for it. Its a shame that I'm not likely to see the video on American TV... I always know where to go to see the Spanish videos, I have a pretty good collection of latin music but not much French (some, but not much). I used to pick up French CD's at the music store in Saudi but in the years since I don't buy them. I don't know the artists, they obviously don't play on US radio much.
Since so many American artists have shot off their mouths politically, I have tended to retreat in my music listening to country and spanish pop music; so far most those artists have either not commented or not done so in the American press, so I can just enjoy the music. Oh, and then there are the Bollywood show-tunes, but thats another subject...
I totally understand. Perhaps, maybe I can find an article for you where Lara is discussing the song in her own words. For me personally, I didn't take the song to be serious. I suppose this was Lara's way of venting out political frustration on both ends. I remember reading in an article that she said that when Americans go to Asia it's for an humanitarian effort(after Tsunami), not because of oil. She was saying how yes, we do, do great things for other countries.
"Just like us , They do evil , Just like us , They do good"
Seems fair enough to me. I don't think any American claims we never do anything wrong.
(If so, one must as why we have the World's highest prison population)
LOL !!!
40% of the prison population are illegal aliens (sorry to offend anyone, I mean "undocumented workers"). Just go to the border and observe the chaos. One day, we'll all pay for this open-chicken cage nonsense and the big bad wolf will eat all the chickens.
