The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

My brother John is ALWAYS stopped wherever he goes. Dunno why. He's about six foot five, but about the most non-threatening looking guy I know (gosh I hope he's not lurkin...;-)

My mother, too! She's 5'0" and in her sixties. Every time coming out of PHX! (Never BWI for some reason...)

Surprisingly, on my last trip to MS I wasn't searched at all!! I got to Boston for my early morning flight, about 30 mins. before boarding time. Got to Security, took off my shoes, put the purse and backpack on the rolling thing, went through the metal detector, got my shoes off the roller, and assumed the position; started unzipping the backpack, etc. The TSA lady finished with the person ahead of me, and I looked at her like, "OK, I'm ready". She just said, "You're all done." I was dumbfounded! But I zipped everything back up and went to the gate, with 20 mins. to spare! I was amazed!

Same thing happened in Gulfport on the way back. It was great!

Hehehe...

This is why I always arrive at airport three hours early. I've got a 9:15 flight next Friday; so I'll be there, oh, around six.

I kind of like flying. Not takeoff, that's horrible. But it's cool to be up so high now and then. I just take plenty of good books...

Don't think I'll take the laptop this time. Five days away from the keyboard might do me some good. And they've got so much planned I wouldn't have time anyway. Dad's promised me P.F. Chang's (ever been there? Mmmm... opulent Chinese...), Mom said they'll crack open some good wine, the kids are insisting we have pizza for our HP reading, plus there's the ballgame...

Sigh. Those five pounds that are all I've lost in a month of this diet and exercise stuff? I have a feeling they'll be back.

Well, tomorrow is the big day. 204 miles of "fun" on the STP (Seattle To Portland)! ;)

http://www.cascade.org/EandR/stp/index.cfm

I start riding at the leisurely hour of 3 am and hope to arrive at the finish by 7:30 pm. Yikes! I am excited, nervous, and I think I am certifiably insane. Please pray for me for a safe ride for everyone involved and maybe, perhaps, pretty please, the treat of a nice tailwind for the last 50 miles or so.

So far, the forecast is for "scattered showers," especially in the morning--I can live with that. It's better than "torrential downpours!" :)

What, your triathalon? Already? Wow. It'd take me like... a year of serious training to do something like that.

I admire you for doin' this, though it *is* a bit crazy. ;-) I'd like to have the stamina for even a normal day's worth of steady riding!

Have fun, and let us know how it all goes! Best of luck!!

Hehehe....

You know, I don't really like driving to Portland much, myself, but for some reason this is "fun."

Like I said, crazy!

How do you get home afterwards?

That's a very good question, and a story in and of itself.

There is a bus back to Seattle, but I hate riding buses especially for that long with a bunch of other sweaty cyclists. :o

So...

My plan is to ride back along the route on Sunday, staying in Longview on Sunday night (about 50 miles from Portland). Then Monday, I will ride from there to Chehalis where my parents will meet me for dinner (about 40-45 miles from Longview). It will be interesting to see if I actually enjoy that part, I hope I do, but I may feel like never sitting on a bicycle seat ever again!

I will check in after I get home, if not before. If I find a way to check-in before then, I will!
