The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I like Tony Hillerman, a LOT! PBS did videos of a few of his books for their "Mystery!" series a year or two ago. See if you can find one at the video store. They're somewhat different from the books, but good stories nonetheless. Adam Beach plays Officer Jim Chee, and Wes Studi plays Lt. Joe Leaphorn. What's funny is that in the books, it's Chee who is the main character, but in the videos, they spend more time on Leaphorn.

It made me start having liberal thoughts, such as, something has to be done to help these people to help themselves. Guess I'm getting all soft in my dotage.

Actually those would be conservative thoughts. Liberal thinking is what has created the poverty in which they are mired.

Lovely pictures, BTW!

SSQ grew up in the MS Delta, which is tornado alley. He was driving home from Jackson one night in the middle of a HUGH rainstorm. When the lightning flashed, he saw about 5 or 6 tornados dancing around the flat lands all around him.

He still shudders when he thinks about it.

How far are you from Cheyenne? My wife is still there and will be for about three more weeks.

After she had already been there for a few days she started experiencing altitude sickness. It went away after a few days. Cheyenne is at 6100 feet and here in Illinois we are probably at a couple hundred at most.

We're about an hour or so from Cheyenne. Maybe 45 minutes. We're only at about 5000 feet here, thankfully I never got altitude sickness.

The altitude didn't bother me either. I smoke and my wife does not and it did bother her.

I *just* saw that there were some shows made. I'd love to see them! Dunno how I could get them...Blockbuster doesn't carry 'em.

In the older ones there's more Leaphorn. I think the earliest (which the library doesn't have as many of) didn't include Chee at all.

I like 'em both.

*guilty look* I just bought Hunting Badger, 'cause the library didn't have it and I was dying to know what happened to the characters next, Chee especially. I don't normally bother reading mysteries in series order, but...

Oh yeah. I knew I had something to tell y'all about. ;-)

I survived about 6 hours in the ER, including the blood work, the CAT Scan and the EKG.

After I was there about two hours it suddenly dawned on me "Doh! I bet it's the acid reflux/hiatal hernia." I was right.

Still, thedoctor said I did the right thing by coming in and they did all the tests to make sure it wasn't cardiac.

He changed my arthritis meds and told me what to buy over the counter for the discomfort. I'm supposed to follow up with my regular doctor, which I have to do for the cholesterol anyway.

We were up in MT a couple of years ago, and SSQ had a bout of altitude sickness. He had known it was going to happen because it had happened to him once on a business trip to Ft. Collins, so he took some meds to counter-act it. Unfortunately all that did was knock him out! He spent a good portion of the evenings asleep when we got back from our day trips.
