The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Perhaps, but any businessman that would take an employee away from his family for no pay is not the direction we want to look, I don't think.

I can't believe companies ask that of it's employees. I've never seen my dad obligated to do something for work on his own time. They had volunteer things that he did but he wasn't required to. Steve is absolutely required to do this as part of his job. Which is just fine with me as long as it's during work hours.

If they paid him overtime, even...sis, I'd never say a word. I'm a big fan of getting all the overtime you can get...but they don't.

He'll have to do Creek Cleanup again, eventually. That's an all-day thing...ALL DAY on Saturday. He's required to do it and gets comp time for it. Yeah, right. I wonder what would happen if he got injured? Is he on the job? Would he get worker's comp? I doubt it.

None of this is in writing, you understand me...it's all verbal. It looks good for the city...they're involved with volunteerism for the environment. But it's implied he'd loose his job if he doesn't do it.

Mmmmm.. collards. I really like 'em. Big'ol doesn't.

Haven't thought much about the fall garden other than I'm tickled that the mums I bought last fall made it through the winter and are currently in the garden. Can't wait to see them bloom again.

That's been my trouble in the past. I start thinking about a fall garden in August or September but according to the planting guide, collards seeds should be sewn in late July.

She means I didn't plant stuff deep enough. I've got some room to add some dirt around them.

I've got the book. I need to read it again and look at planting schedules. I was late actually getting the beds set up.

I'm learning though. I'm ahead of last year.

And my daylilies have been awesome. I'm already thinking of places to plant stuff out front.

It's heartbreaking, but it's the way of things these days. It's how you get ahead. My 'company' expects it and I do it. Big'ol understands but he doesn't like it. His company expects it and he comes through for them (lots of weekend stuff).

It's not what you want to hear and it's not good for families and relationships, but y'all aren't alone!

Hmmm... I think you need to build her a bed so she can demonstrate how it's done! :P

Precisely.

I am not an unreasonable person. My beef is not unreasonable. Steve works hard, and would literally work his life away for free for an employer who could care less. He's got a GREAT work ethic, but he verges on being a workaholic at the expense of his family! He willingly changed his schedule for a stranger without a thought for his family or his school.

I love him! I miss him and want him to come home. With school, I know it's not possible, most evenings...but he's getting something in return for all that hard work.

2J.... You keep saying all this about how he has to do it, and then treating it like a volunteer thing. The way you describe it, it obviously is not. It's something he has to do.

And, I might add, comp time is worthwhile compensation.... If self employed dude takes time off his work day, he doesn't make anything. That may be the case, I don't know, why Steve was adjusting for him.

If this is resolved, let it go.... Lots of us do and have worked jobs with overtime required on projects where we got nothing for it. It's part of life, especially as he moves up. I'd really recommend understanding and flexibility. It won't stop the overtime, but it will keep you on the same side as Steve, instead of putting this between you.

That is hard to hear, but I have suspected this.

And you know, I think I won't be so touchy about it after school is done...he'll be home more!

Maybe I ought to consider going with him...but probably better if I didn't. I'm afraid I'd come across as bitter and caustic.

"Yes, Steve brought his entire family with him to this "volunteer" event because we believe in FAMILY TIME." (spoken through grimacing teeth.)

I wish I had thought of that this year. If she's still living with us and is able next year, I'll do that.

She does care for the plants on the deck.

But her arthritis has been so bad lately, she's having trouble getting around even with her walker. Hip is fine, but this is arthritis in her wrists.

*usually* this kind of stuff is reserved for the junior employees to tend to be younger with fewer obligations. They're also willing to be taken advantage of in exchange for future advancement. My college friends going into law or accounting were bracing for 60+ hr work weeks. I've heard horror stories of 80 hr work weeks. Things ease up once you've paid your dues - in theory. It's rough going in the beginning.

And thank goodness for that, because you get another day visiting!

Do you want to be so active that we go on two trips in two days? Or would you rather relax... I'd like to take you to see both the ocean and the volcano, but I don't know if you'd prefer to just do one of those. We can play it by ear, too, and decide at the last minute...

Maybe where you've worked, but not with the City. Steve never sees that time.

If self employed dude takes time off his work day, he doesn't make anything. That may be the case, I don't know, why Steve was adjusting for him.

That may well be the case, but the dude isn't obligated, he chose to volunteer, Steve didn't. I find it rather imposing for him to come in and even request Steve change the times. Steve kindly changed the times without considering the time he was taking away from his family that he didn't HAVE to. I understand having to do some of these things, Creek Cleanup for example...but in this case, he didn't have to.

If this is resolved, let it go....

I hope it is resolved...just blowing off steam with my friends here.

Heh... I was gonna tell her that the higher he moves up, he might end up in exempt positions where he has neither comp or overtime, just responsibility. I know it can be that way in the private sector, I don't know about the city.

Hehehehe.....I guess I did a pretty good whine...

Me:"Saturday? But I was going to visit people and I don't want to use another vacation day!"

More Senior Dude: "Well....I can probably handle Saturday myself."

Me:"Well...I hate to leave ya shorthanded so let me see if Even More Senior Dude will let me have some comp time."
