The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Well...but black is boring!
My last bike was baby blue. It was a thing of beauty. *sniff* I love bright colors! But I think pink grips would be a bit much.
The blue might be nice, though...

I should learn to do bike maintenance. Shouldn't be hard to manage...bikes aren't all that complicated compared to, say, a Windows XP installation. =] Just find somebody who knows how it's done, and ask him to show you how to do basic stuff, i.e. adjust the shifters, swap out a tire, and so on.

The general care stuff isn't too complicated. Changing out tires, tightening up brakes, keeping things oiled are things you should learn to do. Egggspecially if you have to do repairs on the trail.
The derailleurs are more tricky and I always took the bike in to the shop for that kind of work.
Of course this was ten years ago and twenty pounds ago. *sigh*
Izzit time to go home yet?

GAK! Just reading your training hints makes me feel like I need a nap! ;o)

I'm pretty sure there are places around here that offer free workshops in bike maintenance.
I can swap out a tire and other really basic stuff...adjust the bike seat or stuff along those lines, but that's about it.
I'm not good with hardware, though. ;-) I'm a software support kinda gal. But I suppose that's *partly* my fault.

I'm gonna buy one expensive or two cheap bike accoutrements (expensive means ~$50 range) I think. Like those little tassles for the handles? Or maybe some baseball cards and clothespins for the wheels?
(thanks fer the advice, getting a bike is still on my list of things to do before I die)
To: RosieCotton
Will have to get a shot of mine. The bars hold up aerobars, and bike computer. The aerobars have the light mount and the GPS holder. I can barly see what gear I am in :P

Of course this was ten years ago and twenty pounds ago. *sigh*Heh...I know the feeling. I was at least ten or fifteen pounds lighter last time I was really into biking. But I hope to remedy this...
Sorry I have such an air of recapturing my glory days. ;-) I think I've been drivin' Jen crazy with my bike talk. But those were some of the best times I've ever had...really miss those guys!

As of yesterday I am up to 17 minutes of running (yaaa). Now I am off to go swim laps in the pool over lunch. I have not been this active in many many years (softball tonight), if ever.

I was 10 or 15 lighter too... but that was just last summer :p

Nah, you're driving me crazy with your cats ;-)
Bikes are fun. I had one when I was eight. Then we moved to Western PA, where you can't bike.

You know you like my cats, really.
They're great entertainment!
Except when Halvah wakes up at five wanting *something*, but she doesn't know what. That cat needs a clue. A big fat one.

I am able to live equitably with cats. But yours are sort of weird. And not in normal cat-weirdy ways.

To: RosieCotton
Yeah. I got to live through all my hiking/biking/climbing buddies marrying my friends. The fact that none of my gal pals were into that outdoorsey stuff was just desserts. :) Muahaha.

I used to ride my bike to class every day in the Fall and part of the Winter, when I was in college, but this was MS and it was VEY pleasant, though the first part of the Fall was a tad warm. ;o). It was about a 2 mile ride, but rising gently the whole way. Made the trip HOME very nice; I just kind of coasted.

Me too, when I was in college, most of the time I didn't even have a car. Even got pretty good at riding it in ice and snow, which is tricky at best, especially because this was an old-fashioned ten speed with the curled handle bars and smooth road tires. ;~D
