The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

The Nine crossing the River.

Actually it was just 8 at that point...

Here's a thumb drive for you.

Seriesly, AFAIK thumb/flash drives are all about the same w/regards to reliability and such, so just go with the cheapest you can find for the size you want. Pricewatch.com will show you some good online deals.

Actually it was just 8 at that point...

In the book, it was nine:

The white horse leaped forward. The hobbits ran down the slope. Glorfindel and Strider followed as rear-guard. They were only half way across the flat, when suddenly there was a noise of horses galloping. Out of the gate in the trees that they had just left rode a Black Rider. He reined his horse in, and halted, swaying in his saddle. Another followed him, and then another; then again two more.

One, and another, and another, and two more make five;

At once the white horse sprang away and sped like the wind along the last lap of the Road. At the same moment the black horses leaped down the hill in pursuit, and from the Riders came a terrible cry, such as Frodo had heard filling the woods with horror in the Eastfarthing far away. It was answered; and to the dismay of Frodo and his friends out from the trees and rocks away on the left four other Riders came flying. Two rode towards Frodo: two galloped madly towards the Ford to cut off his escape. They seemed to him to run like the wind and to grow swiftly larger and darker, as their courses converged with his.

And four more make nine.

And then there were none.

No, not talking about cookies. Talking about adware, spyware, etc.

I just bought and downloaded new virus and firewall software for the PC. Need to do the same with thelaptop. Running Adware and then Windows utilities seemed to fix things for now.

How could you have 30 instances 'adware and spyware' every other day if you aren't just talking cookies? I just wonder what it's finding, because ever since I installed the MS antispyware tool many months ago, it's maybe found one or two things total in all it's scans.

I haven't been running the MS antispyware. It goobered up things on Comcast for me. What I downloaded today was recommended by Microsoft.

And remember, we essentially have five users on this one PC, so we're all over the place. And when wife's sister is here, she's on her AOL account.

Afternoon ALL - we are presently sipping on cold ginger beers. Well deserved imho. We were out early, restaining the back yard fence, the side that faces the neighbors behind us.

The whole family have been working hard to renovate the house after they finally got the ex out. Figured we could help the appearance by getting the fence all spiffy looking. Hadn't been done in a while, wasn't any point with the way the ex was letting the yard and house go. Daughter and young son will be moving back in.

I suppose! So I shouldn't wonder if you are just imagining things? Like UFO abductions?

Have you got Spybot S&D? It has a protection that runs in the background and prevents a ton of that bad stuff. If you do, make sure the "immunizations" are up to date.

Anti-virus doesn't usually protect you from spyware, and while Ad-aware is great, it has no proactive protection, so I use all three, plus MS antispyware. I let the MS one run at night, Norton once a week, and run the spysweepers when I feel like it, a couple times a month.

I think you should just assume I'm computer ignorant and I spend most of my time in crisis management because I can't keep up with everything.

I swear, I don't know what they do. Wife will be working in Word and will get some configuration I have never seen and I'll have to figure it out. I don't know how she does it.

That's pretty much the norm, not the exception.

(I need to get back outside, but I don't wanna...)

Yeah, I run Spybot, but I don't have the protection thing running in the backgroud (AFAIK). Is that easy to set up?

I think it's more interesting to imagine it's something more like a UFO abduction conspiracy theory.

At that moment there came a roaring and a rushing: a noise of loud waters rolling many stones. Dimly Frodo saw the river below him rise, and down along its course there came a plumed cavalry of waves. White flames seemed to Frodo to flicker on their crests and he half fancied that he saw amid the water white riders upon white horses with frothing manes. The three Riders that were still in the midst of the Ford were overwhelmed: they disappeared, buried suddenly under angry foam. Those that were behind drew back in dismay.

With his last failing senses Frodo heard cries, and it seemed to him that he saw, beyond the Riders that hesitated on the shore, a shining figure of white light; and behind it ran small shadowy forms waving flames, that flared red in the grey mist that was falling over the world.

The black horses were filled with madness, and leaping forward in terror they bore their riders into the rushing flood. Their piercing cries were drowned in the roaring of the river as it carried them away. Then Frodo felt himself falling, and the roaring and confusion seemed to rise and engulf him together with his enemies. He heard and saw no more.

Where was Arwen...?
