The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Okay, we can call it even. Quickbeam liked the Rowan.
Where is everybody? Like, working or something?

Earendil wears it on his brow as he sails his ship across the sky; it's the Morning Star.

Yeah, probably. I'm a lazy grad student and don't have to work real hours.

But you didn't ask a follow-up question.

Er... Who were the second Elf-Man couple in Middle Earth, and what was their child named?

It became the Star of Eärendil, The Morning and Evening Star. I still like "the dog ate my Silmaril" story.

In a meeting. Just keeping one eye out. Been way too long for me to remember any of these anyway.

We keep talking about having a group re-read. I'd be up for such a thing. You do have a copy, right?

Boromir's dream poem from memory...
Seek for the sword that was broken
In Imladris it dwells
There shall be counsels taken
Stronger than Morgul spells
There shall be shown a token
That doom is near at hand
For Isildur's Bane shall waken
And the halfling forth shall stand.

Er... Who were the second Elf-Man couple in Middle Earth, and what was their child named? Dang...I just read this...there were three elf-human couples. The first was Beren and Luthien, the third was Aragorn and Arwen. I...cannot...think...of...the second couple!
I'll cede you that one. Here's one that should be equally challenging: Luthien Tinuviel's father was the Sindarin king Elu Thingol. What was particularly special about Luthien's mother?

To answer my own: Tuor and Idris were the parents of Earendil.
To answer yours: Melian was a Maia, the only case we know of where such a being had a child.
To throw one back: name the Valar, and if you can, their associations.

To throw one back: name the Valar, and if you can, their associations. I am not equal to that question, although I dimly remember Manwë, Voronwë, and Varda. Was Elbereth another name for Varda?
I am ashamed. =]
Well, if you know enough to answer that one, then you know...
Who slew Azog the orc-chieftan before the very gates of Moria?

"...man are they are well done" Kudos, winmag, and thanks again for all the work you put into this! No, the kudos go to the whole Hobbit Hole. Everybody helps in one way or another. I just get the fun of playing with the stuff, and the agony of shipping it off. BTW, the post awful has just discontinued the acceptance of the customs "short form" for all APOs and FPOs. Just more paperwork with nothing extra to show for it.
I've already emailed this fine young troop (he must be young, if he used the word "sir"), asking for his APO. One of our remaining CQB3s will then be on its way.

Thrain, Thorin Oakenshield's father and the son of Thror.
Who were Frodo's parents?
