*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Read through this thread and kind of lay low for awhile. I don't want anyone thinking this troll is you. Don't post on it, they are looking at all new people with suspicious eyes.

Thanks for the pics, trail ride and show. That's a beautiful trail. You can just tell how "up" Bay was, by his ears. I am glad to hear he was feeling better, and that Cyn did well. Nice looking rig, your truck and trailer. Do you have your tack room all set up?

It's a beautiful morning here, sunny and getting to the high 70's. We were going to go look at the stud, but she is going to a horse show. It's only about an hours drive, so we will go next week. I want to check out her facilities before I take Jody there. Time to get going here and enjoy the nice day.

That's hgh praise! We love her... One of the luckiest impulse buys ever. She's just solid like a little trooper.

We didn't have trouble on the bridge, but it's not comfortable enough for pictures either. Bay goes across like a coiled spring... it's loud and clanky, particularly with more than one horse on it, and it moves when they're on it. They start out slow, and start walking faster and faster to get off it. It's probably a full four feet wide, but I feel like it's narrow with those knife edge railings lurking there to get me in the knees :~D

ecurbh didn't get off for either the bridge or the water. He's brave. I always want to get off and lead them if they're reluctant at all, we brought her halter and lead rope to use if needed, and I sortof assumed he'd have to get off and lead Cyn into the river, and maybe over the bridge, but she was fine. We went over and through each several times from each direction. She didn't want to go first over the bridge, but she was fine to follow. We'll have more bridges like that today, but no river crossings.

We have rain forecast today for sometime. But they have been saying that all week and it hasn't happened yet. I have probably cemented that it WILL happen today, I finally gave up on ever getting some and am watering the yard as we speak:) It was getting pretty burned looking.

I've only had several horses that shied away from getting in a creek, but almost all of them will avoid a puddle if possible.

Thinking about getting in pubbles, made me think about some obstacles at CTR. I've had to side pass into a puddle, side pass out of a puddle, back into a puddle, and side pass to a tree and tie a ribbon in it while in a creek. Those are fun things to work on:)

Thanks on all points! and yes, the tack room is sortof set up. We need to pick up some duplicate supplies... there's a lot that we only have one of... and I eventually want a set of brushes, fly spray, hoof pick, first aid kit, that just stays in the trailer.

Is the stud for Jody the little pony stallion from yesterday? I bet he's cuter than cute in person.

Heh... Eeek. Yes, we'll work on that for advanced training. First step, rivers.... second step, mud puddles :~D

Good morning!

Wow! I love those ferns on the trail. They are HUGE! I'm glad Bay got to feeling better, even if he was a little wired. And Cyn is just a good 'ol girl who just seems to take in stride anything life sends her way. Glad ya had a good ride.

I'm riding at a new place tomorrow. It's called Little River Canyon. It's supposed to be the deepest canyon east of the Mississippi. I'm taking Blade for my friend to test drive before she buys him and I'll be riding Bluebell. Y'all wish me luck. This'll be the first time she's been out on a trail since she was a 3yr old, and maybe ever (she's 9 now). This'll also be my friend's Husband's 1st ride since his heart attack and by-pass surgery in March, so pray for us. He's been wanting to get back in the saddle so bad so we figured this'd be a good one for him. Just us, no pressures, we can go back whenever we want. We're just gonna take it slow and do mostly walking. It'll be a 2hr drive for me so I'll have to get up early. Pictures will be forthcomming on Monday.

Oh, and I did get pictures and video of the breaking rig I posted pictures of yesterday. The poor horse looked pretty wasted by the time I got there. I think he'd been working him with the brake on for about 45 minutes. This was the horse that broke down a tubular steel round pen when he first started working with him earlier this week.

I'm off to my Husband's company picnic in a little while. It was one of those where they said to him, "You WILL be there won't you?". It's ok though, they're giving away some really nice door prizes (a 42" plasma TV, digital cameras and camcorders, computers, IPODS etc) so maybe we'll win something. Talk to ya later...

I didn't know you were selling Blade!

Oh I hate those company picnics.... ;~D Especially when they are on a weekend. If they want to require me to socialize with co-workers, the least they could do is not invade my personal time to do it.

I would like to see pics of the rig thing.

I didn't really mean that I thought you should be doing that stuff...I just always think about that when talking about geting horses in water. That can be challenge enough, without throwing in sidpassing and backing. I never had to do the sidepassing into a puddle on Belle, but I did with the backing, and she wanted no part of it:). She did do the sidepass in the creek for the ribbon tie. Luckily it was in the direction she sidepassed easily:)

When I got Rusty, I practiced all that stuff on him and had him doing it pretty good....and now, of course, he won't make it as a CTR horse, and Harley, hates getting in puddles so it's going to be a real challenge with him. And for a while now, we have had no puddles to work him in.

But I've got all summer, because I'm really hoping to go to a CTR in the fall, since I didn't make it to the one last week. I heard that it was a full ride too....I would really have liked to gone

Becky

I wish we had water as deep as yours to try... I don't know of any river crossings that deep, most are just small creeks like this one. We have lakes, but none on or near horse trails that I'm aware of.

What's the bottom like on your creek? Is it soft or rocky? The thing I don't like about this crossing is the big round rocks, it's terribly uncomfortable footing, and they are usually reluctant to stop and stand anywhere in it, always hoping the next step is not another rock.

I didn't know you were selling Blade...

Yeah, I've got 8 right now and more on the way so I gotta sell some of them or they'll eat me out of house and home. Blade will be just the horse my friend needs. She got hurt pretty bad (broken ribs) on a horse she used to have and the mare she has now is a Jekyll/Hyde type that she can't really relax on. She need a horse that'll be the same whether he's ridden once a year or every day and Blade will be like that I'm pretty sure. He's very relaxed and careful over trail obstacles, loads all by himself and loves people. I love him, but he's a little too laid back for me. I could've sold him 10 times over already, but I want her to have him coz I know she'll love him and treat him right, plus I get him back if she ever needs to sell, so we all come out ahead.

I've probably asked this before, but do you know in advance which tests will be on the ride so you know if you have to practice "sidepassing through a puddle" or "stopping half over a log"?

I don't know if Cyn sidepasses at all ;~D

As far as I know, you never know what obstacles they're gonna throw at you. The fact that you can't "cheat" and practice is part of it. You horse is supposed to have good basic skills and control so he'll do whatever is asked. They don't ask you to do anything where you could get hurt though.
