Windows computer servers tie with Unix in revenue
The worldwide computer server market grew 5.3 per cent to $12.1 billion in the first quarter, with revenue for servers running the Microsoft Corp Windows operating system equalling that of Unix servers for the first time, market research firm IDC said on Friday.
Revenue for Windows servers grew 12.3 per cent to $4.2 billion in the quarter while unit shipments grew 10.7 per cent. Unix servers saw 2.8 per cent revenue growth to $4.2 billion while unit shipments increased 5 per cent.
"The equal level of spending in both segments this quarter showed that Windows servers are gaining traction in the enterprise server space with a combination of deeper investment and richer configurations," said Jean Bozman, vice president of Enterprise Computing.
IDC said that overall server revenue grew for the eighth consecutive quarter as customers invest further in new infrastructure.

I am not anti american, I am not anti closed source, I am not anti windows (hell I dropped some good change getting an MCSE) THe only troll looking for a fight here is you...
Hard to believe when you don't even capitalize it.
So what? Using Linux is either cost-effective or it's not, and what random socialists have to say has no bearing on that.
"My point was I have the same options at dell.com that I do at the apple store"
When you are done, it's still a throw-away, costs more, and your existing software doesn't work on it. Linux is a better alternative to Windows boxes than Mac. If you are going to switch over, you might as well save some money.
I buy Dell only when I want a throw-away box. I build my own for personal use.
Pirating software is very cost effective too, doesn't make it right. And we're not talking about "random" socialists. What we're seeing is a coordinated movement by socialists and communists worldwide, to name it the official operating system of their governments, or pass laws requiring its use. You can ignore these things if you want, but trying to deny them is a losing cause.
Not for my 65 year old father its not..
One is theft the other is legal and encouraged by those who wrote the code...
Since open source advocates admit Linux likely infringes on hundreds of patents of others, Linux is far from in the legal clear.

Countries that have a socialistic background are far more likely to use Linux, or want to switch, because they see software development as community building and a way keep money in the country.
The Cuban government's announcement it is switching from Microsoft's Windows to Linux reflects an ongoing trend of more developing countries and local governments making the change.
Brazil, India, South Africa, China, Russia and South Korea are only some of the countries already broadly using various forms of Linux on a government level. This growth is going to continue, as governments choose Linux not only because people think it is cheaper, but also for political reasons, said Scott Testa of Mindbridge in Norristown, Pa.
"With Cuba, there's resentment toward other countries and part of that shows when they don't want to use Microsoft products that are based out of the United States," Testa told United Press International.
Marcel den Hartog, an architect at the Computer Associates' Linux Technology Group in the Netherlands, thinks the political motivation to separate from the United States and U.S. companies is what is driving the move to Linux.
"At Eastern European conferences, they talk about not wanting to make Bill Gates richer, they see themselves as liberators," Hartog told UPI. "But the Bill Gates Foundation gives more donations to third world countries. It's more anti-capitalism, anti-globalization."
Countries that have a socialistic background are far more likely to use Linux, or want to switch, because they see software development as community building and a way keep money in the country, he said.
"The more socialist background a government has, the stronger they will feel about open source," Hartog said.
Once again: so what? If Linux really is a better solution, then the socialists have made the right decision for the wrong reasons, and we shouldn't deliberately use inferior solutions out of spite.
Any nontrivial program, whether open source or proprietary, likely infringes on some overbroad patent that should never have been granted. I suppose by your standards we should stop using all software.
" Not for my 65 year old father its not."
Uh... Why not?
The interface is just as easy. The software is similar, if not identical.
If he's doing word processing, email and web surfing, Mac has no advantage. The myth of the user friendly Mac interface is just that, a myth.
Of the three user interfaces, I currently rank Windows 1st, Linux 2nd and Mac in a close 3rd. All three are similarly easy to use. The right click, quick menus give Windows a slight advantage. I like the way the mouse tracks in Linux better than Mac, otherwise the two would tie.
That's one hell of an "If" to justify standing side by side with worldwide socialists and communists, don't you think? Maybe not, with a handle like "ThinkDifferent".
Of course not. You should license their use, just like most large companies do, sometimes in the form of "cross licensing agreements." If that's not possible, then you should protect the end users 100% from legal liability. Linux does none of that.
Windows also has been found to infringe on others IP in the past... gues that lifting code too right??
If you rank the 'Linux' gui over mac I have to ask you... which one? kde, cde, gnome, fvwm2, xfwm1 (my all time favorite) xmmf, twm ...... How about the graphical layer the underneath? XF86 or X.org? What version? I could see how someone might rank windows over mac (though I dont agree and it has not been my experience) but to rank 'linux' over either Windows or mac is pretty silly. This is not that the major interfaces have not made headway, I am kind of liking xmmf nice thin and you can run the gnome panel on it if you choose..
Sure did, and I'm glad they were caught and had to pay for it, as they should have. But they did pay for it, and I as an end user was never under the threat of legal liability myself.
Do the well known Linux developers and supporters like Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman want to take this path though? No, they want all US patent laws overturned, instead, so they can infringe on others without ever having to pay.
You already know all of this, of course, and are just running your normal smoke screens and diversions.
yea except when you had to replace their jre with suns because of that fiasco... cost my company a pretty penny to have new versions of old tools installed..
Wasn't a problem for me, I've been using the Sun Java all along in Windows, don't care much for freeware clones of anything, guess it messed you guys up though.
I like Gnome over Fedora. It works great. Never a problem.
