That honor goes to Bob Dylan, who wrote Lay Lady Lay! My dad used to play that song in the car when I was a kid on his cassette player (one of the first installed by GM in the Riviera).
Funny thing is, I always pictured Redd Foxx as Fred Sanford singing that song.
