In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
threnody \THREN-uh-dee\ noun
a song of lamentation for the dead; elegy
Example sentence:
In the opera's final scene, the leading lady sings a threnody to mourn the murdered king.
Did you know?
"Threnody" encompasses all genres. There are great threnodies in prose (such as the lines from Charles Dickens' _Bleak House_ upon the death of Little Jo: "Dead, your Majesty. Dead, my lords and gentlemen. Dead..."), in poetry (as in W.H. Auden's "Funeral Blues": "The stars are not wanted now: put out every one, / Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun..."), and in music (Giovanni Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater," for one). "Threnody," which we borrowed from the Greek word "threnoidia" (from "threnos," the word for "dirge"), has survived in English since the early 1600s. "Melody" and "tragedy" are related to "threnody" through the Greek root that forms their ending -- "aeidein," which means "to sing." By the same token, "comedy" is related as well.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Well, that is not very sporting.

BTW, MB, re: tag-- one of Dilbert's faves is Bladerunner. I only wanted to see it for Harrison Ford...
Women made shirts. Tailors made trousers! And my husband bakes the pies around here. He's much better with pie crust than I am....
But keep those cheeseburgers away from me...I want my weight to go the other way....
As opposed to the Darwin ones with feet...
Jetpowered fish! No wonder I have trouble catching them....
LOL, Argh. It's noisy and contusion causing. Then ya got people thinking that you're beatin' up on one another.... It's a downward spiral.
And that wasn't a bad reason for seeing it. It's got a great soundtrack, too.
i recall one poin, me being older and figuring out that they were still "doing it", and i found it comforting actually. isn't that strange? it didn't disturb me in the slightest. i liked that they were still physically affectionate with each other.
see, i KNEW that... but patton didn't. /smug
This was part of the sermon this sunday. Pastor Ron brought up the woman who allowed a stripper at her daughter's birthday because she didn't want to embarrass her...
I used to threaten to visit my children's schools in a hideous purple muu-muu with orange sunflowers and my red, white and blue converse sneakers...somehow, they never gave me cause. (Visions of a Will Farrell Dog humiliation/ training video popping into my head...)
LOL. I remember when I was little, wondering how God knew that mommy and daddy were now married, and therefore ready for the stork.
no, I didn't. I suck at biology.
some other ideas were to do a little dance step out in public (that would kill my older two for sure, i will dance in place while driving and they roar if someone next to us looks at me, like i CARE!!) or wearing an ankle bracelet
And see, xs, your attitude was one of maturity and sense. I love that. Can you help ME?
Peg came over to drop off a ham before the funeral and met my friend Terri and hugged her and told her she liked her big boobs. Man, I can't wait to be eighty!!
no, it isn't biology, it is the study of the back of cars. Falls churchers have the ones with feet, darwinists you know...
I always do the Cabbage Patch at stoplights when my kids are in the car. Heh heh.
my youngest i think would not mind knowing that type of thing, whereas the older two would start wretching. she always makes lovey dovey references as between the two of us.
Crank up the radio (their station) and brake in time to the music...learn the lyrics and sing along, using good diction...somehow "Baby Got Back" lost it's coolness.
