Gas Grill vs Charcoal Grill
self

Posted on 05/18/2005 3:24:12 PM PDT by hsmomx3

We've been looking to possibly replace our charcoal grill with a gas grill.

The only thing that is holding my husband back is possibly not getting that same charcoal/grill flavor that you would get when cooking over charcoal.

Can anyone tell me if there is any way you can achieve this type flavor when cooking on a gas grill.

Thanks!!

I read down thru the first 5-10 posts, and I'm going to disagree:) Several reasons.

1. It was explained to me that it is not the charcoal that gives food the taste, it is the drippings from what is being cook dripping on to the hot coals and the smoke coming back up. You get the same effect from using gas with those rocks.

2. Personally, I don't care how long I burn the charcoal before starting to cook, I think you can always taste the lighter fluid. That may be just me.

I use a portable gas grill almost everynight to cook my meat, I dont't even have the rocks in it, and it always taste like good grilled meat to me.

They have lighter fluid that is tasteless. I use it.

My advice is to never listen to the idiot that explained that to you. (s)he is wrong and should have zero credibility with you.

Charcoal is near pure carbon, when it burns it makes CO2. Propane is a hydrocarbon, when it burns it makes CO2 and H20. Further propane does'nt cook as hot, nor is the heat as even, nor can you cook 'rich' by limiting air intake, nor can you slow cook on gas (the high is lower, the low is higher then charcoal).

But propane is easy, so is your oven broiler. Save the money on the grill.

It's easy. Get some hickory or mesquite wood chips (near the charcoal at your local grocery), soak them in water, and either place them directly on the grill rocks (which is what I do). Works great, though you've got to be ready with a squirt bottle if/when the chips start to burn, rather than smoke.

Alternatively, wrap the soaked chips in foil -- works well, but I don't like it as much.

Everyone got there opinions but a well seasoned (used) gas grill adds just as much to the taste of good bq than burning wood, I'v done the side by side test, I'm a mesquite man myself but Love grilling on a gas grill also, I just bought the new see through propane bottle on Ebay and it is to cool You can see how much you have and actually see the gas boil while using it. Happy grillin
