This is a usenet/bulletin board discussion from 1983 (or it is supposed to be, anyway) about Return of the Jedi. It is interesting to read the comments and compare how "internet speak" has changed over the years. Click the link for the discussion topics.

Looks pretty much like what I see around here. Little if any change. Now, if you're comparing that (or this) to the shorthand some people use on IMs, that's very different.
true, true. "leetspeak" and "IMspeak" are different than "freeperspeak."
They appear to be as dorky then as they are now
once a dork, always a dork. you can take the dork out of the comic shop, but you can't take the comic shop out of the dork.
LOL... true.. but I really do enjoy most of the Star Wars films I must admit.
Case in point:

Did anyone notice references to Lucas' favorite number in RotJ?
I've got tickets to the screening of the last film, tonight at midnight.
it may not be his favorite number, but 1138 was part of a title of his first short film- THX 1138.he tosses it in wherever he can.
Thanks for posting this link. We just watched RotJ again last night to get ready for our family movie outing at midnight tonight to see the new film. So it was interesting to read the perspectives of 1983. By the way, I still don't think Anakin deserves to become a good ghost at the end, on par with Yoda and Ben.
Never thought of that before. I guess I'd rather it just be yoda and ben, and not switch back and forth between the two versions of Anakin.
How'd you pull off the midnight screening with the kids? Its a school night.

We have one daughter who's 11. She will have to take a nap when she gets home from school, and then we will wake her up at 11PM. Perhaps we are Star Wars fanatics, but she is totally into it! In fact for years I was trying to get her to watch IV, V, and VI, but she acted like it would be torture to make her watch these "old" movies. Then once she saw IV for the first time this past Monday night, she couldn't get enough and insisted on watching V and VI over the past two days.
I have to say as a sidenote that we view her public schooling as basically social time, and her real education begins at home at 3PM and on the weekends. Anyway I think she will survive the interruption in her sleep schedule. We took her to see the midnight premiere of Star Trek Nemesis, and it's always the funnest time to go because that's when the people in costumes tend to come out.
Well there and Bill Clinton trials:

Our oldest daughter, 15,( the original late night baby) did not want to go - in fact, she was in bed before we left for the theater.
P.S. - we share your view on public ed - to me it's necessary to learn to deal with lots of different types of people - that's the education they receive during the day - the rest is up to us.
Good to hear from a kindred spirit! My daughter loved the movie last night, although she was very sad that Padme had to die. I didn't think our small resort town theater would be sold out, but it was. We had bought our tickets earlier, but when we got there at 11:30PM the whole theater was already full, mostly with high school boys I was surprised to see!
